I have two hard discs and two CD drives which are setup as follow:
Maxtor 30Gb (primary master, Windows XP) --> hda
IBM 120GXP (primary slave, Gentoo Linux) --> hdb
LiteON CDRW (secondary master) --> hdc
LG DVD (secondary slave) --> hdd
Thus, the Maxtor drive should show up as /dev/hda.
But, recently, /dev/hda disappeared mysteriously from /dev... I looked at devfsd.conf and all is ok. The drive even shows up in /proc/ide.
Can somebody tell me what's wrong with this?
I use the same kernel configuration I ever used and it always worked this way.
Thanks! _________________ holyshit.org :

Isn't the hda drive faulty? _________________ "I'm just very selective about the reality I choose to accept." -- Calvin |

Yes the drive is healthy. I can boot Windows XP without problems. _________________ holyshit.org :

Did your /dev/hda drive show up as /dev/hde ?
Look at the section where the IDE devices are being detected. |

Hmmm, that's strange.
Are you passing any boot options ? (like hda=ide-scsi)
If you change jumpers and make IBM=hda and Maxtor=hdb, does the same problem occur ?
Bloody Bastard may be right - you could have a bad drive. |
