I run only KDE since the beginning, I've no Gnome components installed and "-gnome" in my USE variables. In other words, there's no Gnome at all in my system (not that I have anything against it! :))
However, after the last emerge sync, this is the output of emerge -up world:

Many gnome-base packages I don't feel I really need. There's obviously an update for KDE, too. Is it a coincidence? Should I really emerge all that stuff?

You can use qpkg to find out what packages you have depend upon the gnone stuff as in
Code:
qpkg -q libgnomeui

You may have to poke around a bit, but this should enable you to track down what packages are requesting the gnome stuff.

I sincerly hate to look like a n00b (even if I am, after all), but... I'm afraid I don't have this qpkg tool - or I'm too fool to find it. Is it part of a toolkit that needs to be emerged?

Edit: I'll take a guess it's gentoolkit, will emerge it, see if I'm right and eventually try to find out where the dependencies are. I need to sleep now.

Thanks.

Yes. Good guess. It is part of Gentoolkit.

I am using KDE so I "USE -gnome" but gnome packages are slowly creeping into my system.

Most of those packages are a dependency of libglade, and they in turn too have dependency's. You might want to try emerge -p world (without the -u option) and see what that gives you.

Thanks for your support, guys. First of all, emerge -p world doesn't look different than emerge -up world: some packages I use, the whole KDE 3.1.1 bunch and a lot of gnome-base stuff. A quick research with the useful qpkg tool shows that many of those gnome things are dependecies of Vice, the Commodore 64 emulator, which I just emerged last night. This is weird both because I don't think Vice is really gnome-dependent (in fact, it works fine here) and because when I emerged it, it stated no dependencies at all.

Maybe I should try to unmerge Vice and see if all those gnome things go away.

Surprisingly enough, I finally found out that all the gnome-related things and the themes were dependencies of dc-gui, the GUI for Direct Connect (p2p). I had it installed, and it worked fine. Now there's an update for it in portage, and it brings all those nasty dependencies along. I wonder if they're all really needed, since I use many gtk apps without them, but I know I'm not gonna install all that stuff. And I never really used DC after all.
