I recently updated my entire system with:
Code:
emerge --update --deep --newuse world

I then updated about 90 config files, something I've been avoiding since I installed gentoo a couple weeks ago. I used dispatch-conf. Most everything seemed to go smoothly. I did not recognize many of the files that were being updated, so for those, I allowed for a complete overwrite. I notice when booting this morning, a warning message. It displayed: "checking the internal tree" and then "system.map not found - unable to check symbols". What does this mean? How do I fix it?

Did you specify a System.map file in your yaboot.conf and then not copy one there? It's not useful on 2.6 to have one, so I'd recommend that you just remove the reference if you're still using it. The only other thing I can think of is that when you rebuild your kernel, you didn't build and install the modules (make modules_install).

Conky will be unmasked when you submit a bug, we usually don't keyword things unless we've been asked to or we use it ourselves. The only way it'll get done is if you ask us to do it, and bugzilla is the way to do that.

My /etc/yaboot.conf makes no mention of System.map. I recently compiled my kernel to include airport support by executing
Code:
make && make modules_install
I still receive the System.map message on boot.

I have never filed a bug before. Also, I have not tried conky because it is masked. Therefore, my bug report would merely state, "please unmask conky for ppc architecture a.s.a.p. if it is ready, thank you." I don't know but this doesn't exactly seem like a bug report but if I am mistaken and it is sufficient, I will gladly file it.

Perhaps if you could supply some context? Where in the boot process does it say that? What are lines before and after?

Unfortunately, that's not really enough for a good bug report, we'd like you to test it first if possible.

Follow these directions here to figure out how to unmask the package on your machine and test it out: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml#masked then submit a keywording bug if it's working for you.

Code:
Checking internal tree
    *Remounting root file system read/write
    *Setting hostname to x
    *calculating module dependencies
*System.map not found - unable to check symbols
    *Checking all filesystems

blah blah blah (all clean)

    *mounting local filesystems
    *mounting USB device filesystem (usbfs)

I have the same problem and not using mac.

This happened to me right after the upgrade of the baselayout package to the newer version 1.11.14 (r2 included).

BTW I'm using LVM2 so my System.map is in /usr/src/linux/ which is part of my LVM2 system.

Hi,

A lot of people are having the same problem in all different kinds of platforms.
This is a bug and has been already filed.
Saddly it seems to be no temporarily solution.

Cheers!

Same problem here and I'm just on an Athlon XP 1.8 G processor.
Nothing fancy...

And I add also figured it was my make modules_install that was missing, but that didn't change a thing.

Do I understand correctly that with a 2.6 kernel, messages like "System.map not found - unable to check symbols" can be safely ignored? My AMD Duron machine shows that message, but it doesn't seem to be a problem. I've tried copying and linking the System.map* file in various ways to no effect. The kernel is 2.6.14.

Had that crop up after upgrading baselayout as well. Somehow, my login screen from gdm got switched to the flowery one too.

To boot, my Logitech diNovo stopped working too... :( It will work during boot, I can use it to choose a kernel in grub, but once the system fires up bluetooth, I'm screwed. Connecting a regular keyboard will work of course, but with a USB-mouse I didn't experience any luck...

Help! I can deal with a pregnant girl-friend, hordes of goblins running down my door and tax audits, but this is driving me bonkers...

Same problems on my SPARC boxes.

I also see

Failed to start /etc/init.d/modules

and

insmod: Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.4.32-sparc-r2/modules.dep

It would appear that "hwclock --systohc" is not being executed on shutdown and the system time is not being preserved. Some of my hardware clocks run slow.

I assume this would normally occur when switching to init 6

Some noobies huh? :P
Just copy your system.map from /usr/src/linux to /boot/ and that should fix the prob.

Been there, done that, got the T-Shirt, ate the Burger, organized the torture and personally orchestrated the screaming of the damned... 8O Still complaining!

BTW: I just realized, I'm sort of in the wrong thread, as I don't have a PPC, but Athlon-XP. But goes to show, it's not really a specific problem. :?

8) How'd'ya think I got it working in the first place?

It's working now, but I still have to reboot to see if it is boot-related. Seems restarting bluetooth services did the trick, for some odd reason...

Now have to fiddle about with the udev rules. Maybe turn off the tarball or so.

Cheers,

Sönke
