Has anyone written an ebuild for Mathematica? Obviously, I need to buy a license; but I notice Wolfram only supports RedHat and a few other uberlinuxen.

I've tried Googling, etc. Only see Mathematica-fonts.

Help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

There is a few in /usr/portage/sci-mathematics your can use.

I use mupad myself.

You could take a look at bug #100588, however it looks as though that bug is now dead.

If you want to learn how to create your own ebuild, you can read the Gentoo Development Guide and use the ebuild from the bug as a starting point, reading the comments from ciaranm for ways of improving it.

I simply installed Mathematica in my local /home/opt/ directory; works without any problems.

Did you install from RPM, or something else?

Well, I need Mathematica for a class, but if there's an open-source clone that would be lovely.

Cheers,
John

The freeware equivalent I believe is scilab (in portage).

I've got a student version running installed from cd.

Hi Aciel!

You can try Maxima. I have used it for a few simple symbolic calculations and it seems pretty good.

Try
Code:
emerge -pv maxima

to see the available instalation options.

Good luck, Cantão!

I, also use Maxima in place of Maple/Mathematica for my courses. Though it does not conform to precisely the same syntax, it is a decent replacement. I tend to get more use out of Octave though, which is essentially the same syntax as Matlab (another program I am supposed to use).

I tried to use Octave as a replacement for Matlab, but all the things we were using it for involved toolkits not available in Octave. =(

Hi Aciel!

What kinds of things are you trying to do with Octave? With more information we can - hopefully - help you better.

Cheer, Cantão!

You cant really compare Mathmatica (I personally prefer Maple) with Matlab/Octave

Both are completely different programs

For a potential replacement to Maple/Mathmatica there is MuPAD (in portage) it is pretty good, doesn't give pretty results (effectivly ASCII art) but same syntax as Maple
