i would love to go right through the kernel and remove all things that are uneeded but i have no idea WTF i'm doing half the time and its all just trial and error (errors mostly :cry: ) , i have recompiled the kernel adding and removing the emuk101 modules compiling then into the kernel and compiling them as modules but it still doesnt work. If anyone out there knows and has the time to help me fine tune the thing i will be forever in debt (as always) :oops:

You have at least 2 problems.

I don't know what the IDE error mean.

For the sound, what is the ouptput of
Code:
lsmod | grep snd

If you don't get any output or don't see the snd_emu10k1, you can try to load it with
Code:
modprobe snd_emu10k1

BTW, in make.conf, it is generally better to use march=pentium4 as mtune=pentium4. It is also safe to have both, but if you don't have a good raison to use mtune, just change it to march. (clfags and cxxflags)

If you want to use the sound, it is good to have at least alsa in your use flags.
ALSA_CARDS="emu10k1" will tell portage to install only the emu10k1 related modules when emerging the alsa-driver package.

It is good to install the alsa-utils package too.

Did you followed the alsa tutorial? (Google for "gentoo alsa").
Use kernel modules approach.
It is quite simple and oyu should get it working (unless you have another hardware/kernel sonfiguration problem).
Alsaconf does all the work, you don't even need to mess with module loading. Just follow the guide if you didn't already.

after i've changed the mtune to march in make.conf will i have to recompile the whole system (emerge system && emerge world) ?

cheers

p.s i followed the guide and even ran the alsaconfig script, however while the script was attempting to load

i even took the card out and reseated it. The strange thing is i only reinstalled gentoo yesterday with the new 2006.1, i was using 2006.0 last month and that seemed to work ok

You don't have to recompile the system. It will change nothing for the functionnalities of your system, the only difference is at march is optimized for a P4 only system, when mtune give you the same optimisation, but not for the ABI and some instructions: Intel 386 and AMD x86-64 Options

The unknow symbol problem is what you get when you have a kernel module version that doesn't match the running kernel. Sometime, a reboot can fix it. Otherwise, you have to double check your kernel config. If using the in kernel modules, you must remove the alsa-drivers package for this kernel. If using the alsa-drivers package, you must be sure at you have only Basic Sound support enabled and nothing else that is in the sound submenu of make menuconfig.

Before installing the asla-drivers package I reboot to use the same kernel as the one I am compiling for. After the installation, it is normally enough to run /etc/alsasound restart to see if it work.

If you still have problem after that, please parse your kernel .config file here. dmesg is not necessary anymore, ot just the part with the error if it changed.

Hi,
Quote:

snd_hwdep: Unknown symbol snd_verbose_printk
snd_util_mem: exports duplicate symbol snd_util_memhdr_new (owned by kernel)
snd_page_alloc: exports duplicate symbol snd_dma_alloc_pages (owned by kernel)
snd_timer: Unknown symbol snd_verbose_printk

Apart from this 'drive confused' thing , it seems there is some module incompatibility in kernel. Do you have more than one kernel sources version installed? IIRC this 'unknown symbol' error happens because you try to load modules compiled for another kernel. Could you post the output of 'ls -l /usr/src/' and 'ls -l /lib/modules'.
Edit: And also the output of 'uname -r'. VUt first try a reboot as suggested by the previous poster

All look good. Maybe something weird happened with your kernel/modules configuration/compilation/installation. I would suggest a re-compilation of your kernel. But maybe someone may have a better recommendation. You may have forgotten to do a modules_install at some point (new kernel image seeing older modules), or copying the right (updated) bzImage to /boot(older kernel image seeing newer modules). In any case, I would recommend you the handbook kernel compilation part as a guide.
Good luck.

I must have recompiled the kernel about 10 times disabling and re-enabling alsa, trying built in and as a modules, just cant seem to work it out as it was working perfecty untill i reinstalled the whole machine with the latest 2006.1. :cry:

its usually the graphics that are a git to get working properly, sound usually works straight away without any issues :?:

BTW: You should enable support for more ram, this is from your kernel output:
Code:
Warning only 896MB will be used.
Use a HIGHMEM enabled kernel.
896MB LOWMEM available.

I suppose you have 1GB or more RAM, so use all you have ;-)

i've recompiled the kernel removing all built in sound drivers and enabled the same config as modules instead. I've also enabled HIGH Memory so now all available RAM is used

Be aware at if you just copy configuration files from an old install to a new one, the timestamp of the files in the new install will be too old, and programs as modules-update will just get confused. You can use the --force option, or open and save those older files. So check this, if it is the case.

If you still get the same error with alsaconf, can you paste you kernel .config here?

A fast check show at you have configured both Alsa and Oss in the kernel. Please remove completly OSS (Open Sound Support). Another thing is at you have both the snd_emu10k1 and snd_emu10k1x. You must choose only the one that correspond to your sound card. (Normally, it will not arm if you have both, but it will take more time to compile.) And you must not instal the alsa-drivers package with this kernel.

In Code maturity level options, config_experimental is safe, but I don't know the 2 other. I use a vanilla kernel with just the rt patch and it don't have those options.

Things I would change:
# General setup
Config:_localversion_auto=y
Config_posix_mwueue=y
Config_bsd_process_acct=y

#Processor type...
Config_Smp=Y ? Do you have more as one cpu? If not, don't select this option but Local Apic and IO-apic on uniprocessor. Some motherboard will work with all selected ys you are doing, but other will get in trouble. It is better to select only the option(s) relevant for your hardware.
#Config_cc_optimize_for_size is not set
Config_hpet_timer=y
Config_preempt_none=y? Are you doing a server or a calculator? If not, choose another preemption model.
Config_prempt_bkl=y I don't know this model. I have rt premption.
#Config_x86_msr is not set. So you have only one cpu.
About the memory model, you have more options as me.
Timer frequency.. I have 1000Hz here, but sound is very important to me. Some audio programs as rosegarden will not work well with less as 1000Hz. But for a server, 100 Hz is good. For a desktop, every thing between 250 and 1000 will wok, but the responsivness of the desktop will change.

#executable file format
It is safe to select elf and have the 2 other as modules.

#Generic driver support
#Config_fw_loader is not set. not sure if it is needed if you want the alsa-drivers package. It will not arm to select it.

#Ata/atapi
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDECD=m
For the cdrom

#sound
CONFIG_SOUND=m

1) for the alsa drivers:
#CONFIG_SND is not set
#CONFIG_SOUND_PRIME is not set

2) for the in kernel alsa driver
as you have done it but
CONFIG_SND_PCM_OSS_PLUGINS=m
CONFIG_SND_RTCTIMER=m (some audio programs just need it)
CONFIG_SND_SEQ_RTCTIMER_DEFAULT=y (its because Herz must be at least 1000Hz) (alsa will work without those 2 option and Hz to 1000Hz, it is MIDI programs that need it, but nor the pcm sound. CONFIG_SND_PCM_OSS_PLUGINS=m is good to have in all cases. I would say at it is needed even if it is not an obligation.)
#Pci devices: see first remark
#Open sound system
CONFIG_SOUND_PRIME is not set !

Have you done a mrproper recently. Sometime, it is not enough to just do make menuconfig, make and make modules_install to install a new version of the same kernel. You can try to first remove /lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r7, rerun make_modules_install and reboot.

If it doesn't help, copy .config in another directory, run "mrproper" in /usr/src/linux and move back your .config file. After, make oldconfig, make, remove /lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r7 and make_modules_install.

In # Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
CONFIG_SND_PCM_OSS_PLUGINS=m or y is better. (OSS emulation) They add it recently. It is not why you get the error, but without it, you will only get less functionalities with the OSS PCM emulation. And with a card as an emu10k1, I just don't want less functionnalities. Some programs can maybe just need it.

i removed /lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r7 then ran 'make modules_install and rebooted but still had the same errors showing at boot

i then moved the .config file out of /usr/src/linux and ran mrproper but got 'Command not found" what do i need to emerge to install mrproper

i've also changed the config_snd_pcm_oss_plugins to =y

Sorry, it is "make mrproper".

Dominique_71 your a star my sound has never been has clear as this before :o

i'm nearly there now, i've only got 3d rendering to sort now :D

I currently have nvidia-drivers emerged. Initially 3d rendering was working with these drivers but when i emerged XGL & compiz i seemed to have lost 3d rendering. I unmasked the 8774 drivers and installed them but i was getting worse FPS in glxgears, so i went back to the previous version

glxinfo | grep render
direct rendering: No
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 6600/AGP/SSE2

glxgears
21616 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4313.389 FPS
29853 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5970.244 FPS
29885 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5960.804 FPS
29885 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5973.021 FPS
28631 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5702.987 FPS
X connection to :1.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

Just rtfm: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml#doc_chap2
As for mrproper, it is explained in the README in /usr/src/linux.
I must comment out or remove the dri option in the modules section.

I followed the http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml#doc_chap2 guide,

firstly without the nvidia driver compiled-in and not selected as a module, i installed DRI and AGPGART into the kernel
Loadable module support --->
[*] Enable loadable module support
Processor and Features --->
[*] MTRR (Memory Type Range Register) support
Device Drivers --->
Graphics Support --->
< > nVidia Framebuffer Support
< > nVidia Riva support
<*> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)
<*> VESA VGA graphics support
(X) vesafb
--
then unmasked the 8774 & emerged nvidia-drivers then rebooted and updated xorg.conf
--
lsmod
Module Size Used by
nvidia 4542548 20
--
glxinfo | grep render
direct rendering: No
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 6600/PCI/SSE2
--
glxgears
20353 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4044.912 FPS
21768 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4326.596 FPS
21660 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4328.924 FPS
21791 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4343.879 FPS
--

still no luck

then i repeated the above but using the 8762 Nvidia driver, the results in GLXgears were slightly higher but still no Direct Rendering

--

So then i removed the nvidia-drivers & recompiled the kernel with in-built nvidia driver and tried that route. After the recompile i rebooted but i couldnt get X to start at all :(
so now i've reverted back to the 8774's for the time being untill i can get this sorted.

Any further advise is welcomed with open arms :?

Read it one more time:
Quote:
Code Listing 2.15: Updating the Module section

Section "Module"
(...)
# Load "dri"
Load "glx"
(...)
EndSection
...
Code Listing 2.17: Running eselect

# eselect opengl set nvidia
...
Code Listing 2.19: Checking the direct rendering status

$ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes

And you must be in the video group.

I have added my username to the audio group, but when i've been running glxinfo and glxgears i've been running them as root with the same outcome

glxinfo | grep render
direct rendering: No
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 6600/AGP/SSE2

glxgears
22042 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4396.039 FPS
29769 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5948.376 FPS
29771 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5953.452 FPS
