I´m installing Gentoo on a Alphastation 255.

I get this when trying to format the partitons:
" Buffer I/O error on device sda2, logical block 96120
lost page write due to I/O error on sda2."

There are several messages that is the same but difering on the logical block number.

I am new to this type of error..

I made the sda2 smaler,. no formaring error from mk2fs anymoore.

Is the disk bad?

That sounds like a dud disk. Perhaps it's worth throwing it in a x86 machine, and running a low-level format just to see what the extent of the damage is.

It may be possible to dodge the bad sectors, etc ... but it definately sounds like you're up for another drive.

Also you could try using the "badblocks" command under linux and make a "destructive" test - it writes some patterns on the disk and sees if they stay... But make shure you have backed up your data...
