If you don't have a good reason to unmask a package, don't.
Things get masked when they are known be broken (or very potentially). _________________ Hello. |

More importantly, don't go unmasking packages unless you're willing to help out yourself with any problems you have.
Things are generally masked for a reason. Opening bugs or asking in the forums about masked packages, without expecting to have to contribute anything yourself, is not exactly likely to get you in either the devs or anyone elses good books
So if you want to help fix whatever's wrong, go for it. Otherwise, either leave it alone or don't complain if it doesn't work! |

About two weeks ago I replaced KDE 3.4.3 by KDE 3.5 because of all the
raving reviews.
I had to not only unmask 3.5 but a lot of other software as well because
of dependencies. It messed up my whole system!KDE 3.5 ran fairly well
but there were a lot of things not going well.
So I reinstalled 3.4 and replaced all masked packages by unmasked ones,
did revdep-rebuild and emerge -e system and world etc.Took me quite some time
to repair the system.
Well,you live and learn. |

3.5 works ok on ~amd64. I don't tend to us it, but I keep most of the decent DE's/WM's on my main desktop for playing around purposes Seems to run a little faster than gnome, which was 'initially' (i.e. pre-gentoo) my #1 DE.
Nowadays I tend to stick with fluxbox for personal things, or KDE when testing stuff is ok to try to get used at work. (if the people can only just use a windows system for word processing, I figure KDE is the best DE for them ) |
