Thus, we are all empowered to choose the mirrors of our choice, for the packages of our choice! Here's a quote from Mr Daniel Robbins himself which should make things clearer (with a corrected typo ... hehe). Thanks to spider for the information. Haven't tried it yet ...

Yes, this has been added to Portage *grin* :) (I love being able to say
that). You can define mirrors in
/usr/portage/profiles/thirdpartymirrors, and use them as follows:

SRC_URI="mirror://gentoo/myspecialfile.tar.bz2"

SRC_URI="mirror://sourceforge/meep-1.0.tar.gz"

The work on this code was spearheaded by Ryan Phillips, so props to Ryan
for working with me on getting it in there. Format for the
thirdpartymirrors file is:

<keyword> mirror1 [mirror2]...

Multiple mirrors will be tried in-order. Please remember that this
feature appears in (if memory serves) Portage 1.9.11, so you can bet
that a very large number of people aren't running it yet. It may be
best to add mirror:// support only after we've officially phased out
<=sys-apps/portage-1.9.10.
