|
|
Hi,
Did anyone try to install the miktex package manager for unix systems on a gentoo system?
(This is like portage, a package management system, but specifically for a TeX system.)
More info via <http://www.miktex.org/unx/>.
I got stuck during the installation process, I think because I'm trying to install it as a user, and it wants to install stuff (libraries) in /usr.
Erik

| Nope. I was lazy and used the TeX LiveCD. No trouble at all. |

No hiccups in the installation?
Did you remove (or never install at all) teTeX? |

What's wrong with Tetex? _________________ Alle dingen moeten onzin zijn. |

Outdated packages (even with teTeX 3), no easy way to upgrade packages, some nice packages missing (because not free enough,...). TeX Live seems much more comprehensive and up-to-date at first glance, but no e-build(s) are available.
The (La)TeX community is very active; useful bugfixes/enhancements to packages are very common. Testing is painless with a good package manager. MikTeX on windows is superb in this regard. Its package management is being ported to Unix, but this is still in beta and no e-build is available. |

Never installed any TeX distribution at all.

Regarding MikTeX/teTeX? See above.
Regarding the live DVD, all you need is download the image and put it somewhere. They have an installer script that has to be run once, this installs their scripts into the various locations on the system. Afterwards you just have to pop in the DVD whenever you want to use it and mount it, then everything works like it should.
I put the DVD image into my data partition and created an entry in /etc/fstab that mounts it via loop. You can enable (La)TeX support via two mouse-clicks in Konqueror then (using the Media tab).
Since I don't use any fancy packages and since I don't care about fiddling around and updating the TeX tree by hand, this solution is the best for me. |

The MiKTeX Package Manager or MiKTeX Tools for Unix is just a manager no complete TeX system, so you can use for the care of your teTeX installation by upgrading packages out of the MiKTeX repository. That's what I did with the Windows version so now I have no reason left to start Windows again...
I provided an ebuild (very crude) in Bugzilla for Beta 3 of the MPM _________________ Christian Faulhammer, Gentoo Lisp project, GNU Emacs wrangler

It's a command line program, so starting it from a graphical interface like the Gnome application starter is like calling tar from there. _________________ Christian Faulhammer, Gentoo Lisp project, GNU Emacs wrangler

Now there is an ebuild, my initial request is fulfilled.
Will mark as solved. |
