is there any way of tweaking portage so that it looks at
some specific server rather than the default..
i am having trouble installing gnome because a package is
missing on the gentoo server...

the package is gone-icon-theme-1.0.1.tar.bz2
it is missing on ibiblio.org even..
could be a time out issue on behalf of portage..
incase a server does respond portage should move on..

what should i do now?

http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/mirrors.xml has the official mirrors.

The option that you're looking for is GENTOO_MIRRORS in make.conf. Mine looks like this:

Code:
GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://trumpetti.atm.tut.fi/gentoo"

That line looks if tut.fi has the file and if it doesn't, portage downloads it from the website of the package (for example kde.org).

Note that if a file doesn't exist in ibiblio, I doubt that it'll exist in any other of the mirrors.

My experience also shows that the mirrors update pretty slowly. Many times when I'm emerging a new ebuild that just got to the portage tree it cannot find the file from the mirrors and has to resort to the main site.

I'm having the same problem. Trying to access ftp.gnome.org, but doesn"t work. None of the other servers offer the files I need, including this icon thing. I hope someone will find a solution very soon, either for choosing a different server (how about a "real" "gnome" mirror instead of a gentoo mirror?! -> how overwrite this non-gentoo-mirror portage setting??), or by finding another gentoo server that is actually up to date... the "real" strange thing, however, is that logons to ftp.gnome.org work - only the download itself is delayed/rejected. Conclusion: They can't be "down".
