is there any way of tweaking portage so that it looks at
some specific server rather than the default..
i am having trouble installing gnome because a package is
missing on the gentoo server...
the package is gone-icon-theme-1.0.1.tar.bz2
it is missing on ibiblio.org even..
could be a time out issue on behalf of portage..
incase a server does respond portage should move on..
what should i do now? |

http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/mirrors.xml has the official mirrors.
The option that you're looking for is GENTOO_MIRRORS in make.conf. Mine looks like this:
Code: | GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://trumpetti.atm.tut.fi/gentoo" |
That line looks if tut.fi has the file and if it doesn't, portage downloads it from the website of the package (for example kde.org).
Note that if a file doesn't exist in ibiblio, I doubt that it'll exist in any other of the mirrors. |

My experience also shows that the mirrors update pretty slowly. Many times when I'm emerging a new ebuild that just got to the portage tree it cannot find the file from the mirrors and has to resort to the main site. |

I'm having the same problem. Trying to access ftp.gnome.org, but doesn"t work. None of the other servers offer the files I need, including this icon thing. I hope someone will find a solution very soon, either for choosing a different server (how about a "real" "gnome" mirror instead of a gentoo mirror?! -> how overwrite this non-gentoo-mirror portage setting??), or by finding another gentoo server that is actually up to date... the "real" strange thing, however, is that logons to ftp.gnome.org work - only the download itself is delayed/rejected. Conclusion: They can't be "down". |
