Just open a console and start
Code:
alsamixer
Your volumes are probably very low or muted. There is also a volume-module for e17 (see http://www2.get-e.org/Resources/Modules/), but I haven't used it yet.

If you add alsasound to your default bootlevel
Code:
rc-update add alsasound default
it will save your settings when shutting down and restore them when booting. Simply start them now with
Code:
/etc/init.d/alsasound start
so your current configuration will be saved.

Or even easier :-p

Code:
# alsaconf

It will guide you through everything to configure your card

Then
Code:
# alsamixer

Play with levels

Then
Code:
# alsactl store

then
Code:
# rc-update add alsasound default
