The gentoo installer is very neat, I like the option to save all the config decisions and come back to the installation later.
I already have Debian (etch) installed, with data in /home and /data on separate partitions. I have a backup of these data. I'm wondering if the gentoo partition process can retain these data partitions without reformatting?
Thanks, Darren |

It's good that you have full backups... mine were a little out of date when I first tested the new installer.
The shipped version of the installer will/can/usually does destroy all partitions on the drive. (since I lost my Windows partition, among others, I guess it's a feature...) You can try updating the installer to the newest version and see if it still has partitioning bugs. The instructions for updating are in the FAQ or howto or whatever it is called. There is a link on the desktop to the documentation that tells you how to update.
Good luck. _________________

I strongly recommend against using the graphical installer if you want to keep your partitions. It's very hard to understand exactly what it is doing and it would be very easy to lose all of your data.
Try doing the standard Gentoo install; as long as you don't do anything silly like delete or format the partitions, then your data will be fine. |
