|
|
Hi all,
I have several problems but let's start with 1 ..
So every time I install a Gentoo system with the Gnome Desktop environment I get this annoying popup telling me :
Error panel already running will exit panel. (or something similar)
Anyway I've been googeling on it and came on similar bugs but I did not get to the point where I understand where the problem might lie.
So ... is it just me or are others out there having the same problem ?
Thanks for helping me out, mates. _________________ Let's become great. |

see if you have anything in preferences>sessions
try removing all the panels and save the session and log out.
Find the config file in your home folder and backup/remove.
never had the problem so I couldn't tell you. _________________ AMD 3000+ xp-m (133@16.5 default) 190x11.5, 1024mb ram, geforce 6600GT @ 580/1090 |

I tried several things over several weeks, however, have not been able to rid myself of it.
Finally realised it was not a prob as my machine is up for so long at a time it is not hard to click 'OK' and get on with my work. It hasn't caused any other problems that I can perceive at all.
If I was booting my machine every day, then, I think I would go quietly gaga. _________________ Regards, Robert

Hello,
Well I looked at the sessions and I think I might have spooted something.
I have once = "gnome-panel--sm-config-prefix /gnome-panel-h0i3tT/"
and I also have just simply = "gnome-panel"
Is this the duplicate command I am looking for? _________________ Let's become great. |

Anyway I tried to remove one.. apply it.. but it's no use..
As soon as I logout and login I get the same annoying message again.
Did anyone do recently a fresh install of Gnome ?
I do not have a problem to start troubleshooting it, but I would need to know where there might be logfiles logging this.
Or which service could be started to dump a message somewhere... _________________ Let's become great. |

I have just, finally, got rid of that 'extra panel error' message.
I have been testing E17, logging in and out from Gnome/E16 and E17, and each time I logged into Gnome/E16 that error message would sit there annoying the hell out of me. As I said before, continued repeats would drive me gaga!
Time to fix it
Go to ~/.gnome2/ and open the file "session" for editing.

As you can see, the extra panel setting was last on my session list. It also seems to include any open apps, such as 'gedit' (opened it to edit the file), but commands put into the Sessions - startup section are saved in another file called session-manual.
I deleted the lines starting with '6' and changed the number at the end of 'num_clients=' to '6'.
Save, logout and login again.
The error message is gone! _________________ Regards, Robert

Hello there !
So I read your notes and decided to give it a try ..
First I just started my Gnome session and edited my session file to remove the (yes) 2 extra gnome-panel entries !
I logged out and logged in again.. result : Error ...
Started to look around and noticed the entries which were added again and I was wondering what could alter this session file
Then it hit me : Gnome can automatically save your current setup.. so I unchecked the checkbox and I was ready to go.
Felt quite happy because the Error did not appear anymore.. Still some unnecessary windows opened up so I decided to logout and tell Gnome to save my current setup... Next thing that happens when I log back in ... yep, the Error.
So did it again without the windows and now it works fine !
The only problem that I have is that I never will use this 'save my current setup' again as it probably does not recognize my gnome-panel entry as the correct one ? (that should be the one with all the options, as gnome is always trying to add native clean gnome-panel entries)
a bug or not a bug ? that is the question .. _________________ Let's become great. |
