I'm planning on buying a new computer and installing gentoo on it.
Any recommendations on hardware that works best with gentoo?

Basic specs would be an Althon based system, DDR266 or 333. It's mostly going to be used as storage, so if you know any motherboards with RAID onboard that work under gentoo, please tell :).

There are several threads relating to this topic.. however...

ram shouldn't be your primary focus if your primary goal is storage. While its true that most modern Athlon boards support DDR 266 and DDR 333, you might want to invest in a slightly slower motherboard that handles either more ide devices, or just scrap the whole promise/highpoint/etc. IDE raid controller ide and go with a nice 3ware controller...

I agree. For a "storage box", I'd say that 400 mhz or 100 mhz RAM doesn't make a difference at all. Buy what's cheapest.

I had an ABIT K7MAX2(or something like that), and it had IDE RAID and Serial ATA + a SATA converter (meaning that you could use regular IDE devices on the SATA controller). It could have used 5 IDE HD's right out of the box, be sure that the kernel supports your configuration - the XFS-sources seem to have good hardware support. Good luck!

apologies, didn't see these other threads, do point me in their direction.

yeah, I know I don't need much for storage, but I'd like to have some speed as I'll also be using it for video encoding

I think all you need is a fast CPU, some RAM, plus a HD that's able to keep up. The more CPU speed+extensions the better.
