Hello,
I'm installing Gentoo on my new dual opteron 265 and I have some problems with xorg. The video card I have is a GeForce 6800GS using PCI express port.
Current stable release of nvidia drivers (1.0.6629) produces modules with unknown symbols (like unregister_ioctl32_conversion). The latest drivers (1.0.7676-r1) which make the computer crash (even magic keys don't work!). With the nv drivers, X still doesn't work and the cursor disappears in the console but I can do a clean shutdown or look at dmesg. I've got the foolowing error:
| Code: | | mtrr: type mismatch for c0000000,10000000 old: write-back new: write-combining |
/proc/mtrr gives the following results
| Code: |
reg00: base=0x00000000 ( 0MB), size=8192MB: write-back, count=1
reg01: base=0x200000000 (8192MB), size=2048MB: write-back, count=1
reg02: base=0x80000000 (2048MB), size=2048MB: uncachable, count=1
|
X works with Vesa drivers but the mouse is slow and the screen is flickering. The same kind of problem with mtrr seems to be present in Xorg.0.log
| Code: |
VESA(0): Failed to set up write-combining range (0xc0000000,0x10000000)
|
Does anybody have the same kind of problem (of course solution are welcome )? If you need more config or log files, just tell me.

You would be helping us to help you by including more info regarding your system, in particular, the motherboard used, and, consequently, its chipset can be a large factor. |

| Dual Opteron chips and a 6800? I trust you have an adequate PSU like 600W. Check the voltages on your rails in bios setup. |

Thanks for your help.
I use a Thunder K8WE motherboard (based on nforce Pro 2200/2050) with 8Gbytes of memory and a Titan 550 Antec case (using its 550W PSU). In BIOS, I've tried both memhole mapping set to disable and software (only software mode allows to access the full 8Gbytes of memory).
I've installed Gentoo including KDE and gnome without any compilation problem. I think this is a good test of the motherboard/CPUs/memory (but not the video card).
Here is some partial (but I hope relevant) informations of the lspci -v command

| 8GB of ram, hmmm. You could try taking out half and/or recompiling the kernel against different memory modes. On the subject of ram, test it with memtest86. Fast cpu but it could take a while to get through 8GB. |

With 4GB, I still have the same problem. But with 2GB, vesa and even nvidia (but not nv) is running perfectly (including GLX). The mtrr error messages have disppeared.
Unfortunately, the mtrr support in the kernel can't be disable if I want to use the nvidia drivers |

OK. I've solved my problem. What I have done is to tweak the BIOS. Here are the setting I used
Main:
-> Installed O/S : Linux
Advanced / Hammer configuration
* Memory hole
-> 4GB Memory Hole adjust: Auto
-> IOMMU : Enable
-> Memhole mappaing: Software
* MTRR Mapping : Discrete
Thanks for all the hints! |
