So, the install manual mentions doing an emerge sys-install/gentoo-sources.
When I do that, it fails, stating that it couldn't find a match.
But, since I'm using stage3, all the rest of the instructions worked fine. I was able to
compile the kernel normally. How can I tell if I was using optimized gentoo-sources? |

Are you sure it says to do emerge sys-install/gentoo-sources? sys-install isn't and hasn't ever been a category that I know of. Just do emerge gentoo-sources, and you should be fine. If you want to see other options, just do an ls of /usr/portage/sys-kernel _________________ Chad |

Sorry, you're correct. It's indeed sys-kernel/gentoo-sources.
That was the command that didn't work. I also tried just emerge gentoo-sources which also returned an error about not being able to find the package. |

Sorry, the previous post was made without having logged in.
Anyway, emerge gentoo-sources fails with the following message:
Calculating dependencies !!! Couldn't find match for gentoo-sources; aborting.
ls /usr/portage/sys-kernel returns the following items:
- linux-headers
- linux-sources
- openmosix-sources
- usermode-sources

Dude! When was the last time you did an emerge sync? 1985? _________________ Chad |

So I am guessing that the answer is actually never. Did the portage tree come with the stage3 tarball, then? If you have network connectivity, you need to emerge sync. If you don't have it on that machine, but you can get access from elsewhere, then you can get a snapshot of the portage tree from www.gentoo.org. Failing those, then just emerge linux-sources. That is an older kernel, but it should still work. _________________ Chad |

Hmm, interesting. I downloaded the 1.1a ISO image with stage 3 on it. I figured that was as up-to-date as I could get, yet, i still have a portage version 1.8.18, which apparently isn't able to easily change to downlaod from different rsync mirrors?
I'm willing to start over from a different ISO if this will end up being difficult, but I don't see anything higher than 1.1a. Should I make my own 1.2 ISO? |

All you have to do is emerge rsync, and then emerge -u (-p) world system. This would update your portage tree, and then update any outdated packages on your system.
Hope this helps. _________________ Postcount ++ |

Bzzzt. no. His broken portage can't emerge rsync, much less update system and world.
Anonymous (Odin's Dream?), there are tons of posts on the rsync problem -- many on this forum web site. You need to make a small hack to your portage, and then you will be able to use it to update your portage tree. _________________ Chad |

chadh, thanks for the info. I've been looking through the posts on hacking portage. I was just wondering if there was a more current ISO I could use, might as well... |
