Sorry for bordering you again, but now I will like to test novell-konqueror-plugin, so I've tryed to emerge it, but I'm unable to download kio sources:

Thanks for telling me that the kio_slp src.rpm is not existing.
i am always a little bit behind the releases
i have updated the overlay to the latest kio_slp.
the novell-konqueror-plugin is not working at the moment.
but if you can find out what is missing it would be a great help.

Console1 works great, and novell application bar works good too. The problem is, if I try to modify user settings from novell application bar, that it looks for yast and it isn't available in your portage overlay.
Thank you for konqueror plugin, now it compile, but it seems to does not work as you say. IMHO, it doesn't work, because it use slp mulicast, I should try to set it with a unicast scope.
After that, I would like to replicate my office edirectory on to gentoo machine, and see how this can be done.

the user settings function is missing by intention.
a suse optimised yast on gentoo ??
for this one configfile /etc/security/pam_script.conf
a gui is not needet
by the way edir packages got to version 8.7.3 SP9

Sure, on gentoo we do not need yast, we have portage 
I've updated the "novell" overlay, and I'm trying new ebuilds.
Do you know where is the slp configuration?

A smull bug: ConsoleOne can be run only from root. It is installed only for user root:root.
Maybe in the next version you can create a group novell from the ebuilds?

updates to consoleone (first part for supporting non-root use)
looking what files are modified by the novell client yast plugin on suse workstation to reproduce on gentoo

I'm trying to figure why novell-konqueror-plugin doesn't work. When I try to start konqueror and browse nnn:/ I get an error regarding missing kio_nvkios.
When compiling from ebuild I haven't see anything regarding this file. Maybe the plugin doesn't work because this file is missing?

I have made some small updates to the client.
one step to the working slp browse and novell network browse
a new package was added to the overlay it holdes some default configs ( /etc/opt/novell/ncl/*.conf ) i have extracted from the yast package
(parts of the yast package are also required to import the config into the xtier registry Server)
a merge of the novell-client package adds the missing packages to World
the konqueror-plugin and ui-base packages are modified to reflekt the file location for a gentoo system.
the nnn:/ error message changed from to
one step closer to

I would like to point out that after the agreement between Novell and Microsoft, all Novell products
(yes, even Mono and Suse) could contain Microsoft intellectual property. That would put every distro containing
Novell products in a difficult situation: Microsoft lawsuits.
Isn't to be excluded that , full of millions (more than 400, they were paid) as actually they are, Novell will also agree to
speak (from the MS side) in front of a tribunal that they used Microsoft technologies inside their products.

the download error is something that has more to do with your gentoo system
take a look at http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-325258-highlight-gzip+stdin+gzip+format.html
long ago i also had such a problem (with files from a gentoo mirror)
i dont know if this helps but i have rebuild every dependency of wget (big tree)
the ntls package i also had this problem novells caching server isn't reactiong that fast
only emerge --resume and the problem is solved.
consoleone updated to 1.3.6f
still not running as normal user

I'm still trying to point out which is the problem with noell-konqueror plugin.
Running konqueror from Konsole and pointing it to nnn:/ I get this error:

I think the konquror plugin isn't able to run on gentoo.
a binary module for kde compiled for kde 3.5.2 (suse edition) on gentoo kde 3.5.5 (standard)
this combination is not looking good.
i think this module will be a real problem.
getting slp browse working wouldn't be such a big task.

Maybe, it would be very difficult, but the error message seems to bring to a step in the right direction.
IMHO, it is looking for some configuration file, that it didn't find, because it is unavailable on gentoo, or in the wrong place.
Even a small difference here can lead to a problem.
Or maybe next version of this plugin, will solve the rebus

I've looked deeply in strace but there is no error matching your's. BTW I've found this trace really usefull because I've found some missing dependencies, but I think they aren't related to our problem.

It is really strange. Maybe this error happens because you are using qt3 and not qt4? I've both compiled and I don't have this problem.

I've downloaded the file by hand from download.novell.com and it works. I'm still investigating if it can be a problem of wget or not.

what are the missing dependencies?
my system is compiled with USE flag immqt-bc as the suse qt system.
do you have a suse client with novell-client install by hand?
so you can also run strace ... at this system.
at the moment i have not found something important in my suse strace.log
