Right: so I've been recording video from a Huappauge wintv PVR USB 2 in Windows ME and I have then been editing the resulting videos in linux using mencoder. For various reasons (I hate rebooting plus Windows ME fat32 has that 4-gig file size limit plus I want to (eventually) do everything in linux) I would like to record the video on the linux side (most likely using mencoder/mplayer). As far as I can tell, before I can do that I need to get the proper specific ("video for linux"?) driver for the Hauppauge.
A google search yielded this: http://www.isely.net/pvrusb2.html
Has anyone tried that? I question whether it would for for me for multiple reasons, including:- I run a monolithic kernel (no modules)
- His method seems overly complicated
- his method is hard (for me) to understand
If anyone here was tried it and it worked (or didn't work, for that matter), could you please post here? Thanks |

Are you hardcore against having that driver loaded as a module? If so, that will probably stop you from using it, as I doubt that driver will be merged into the kernel source tree anytime in the near future.
I've used the ivtv driver for Hauppage cards, which is also a 'in progress' bit. It's good, however, much better than the windows driver in my opinion. So, I would say give it a TRY... but yes, it's going to be difficult. Especially since it's beta/in progress stuff.
So I am thinking this may be a big 'NO' for you, but I'd encourage you to try it anyway, if nothing else so you have something to base any decisions to drop the Windows bit on - i.e. 'ok, way too frustrating' vs 'ok maybe this wasn't THAT hard, and I have bigger issues with the filesize limit.' |

Not "hard core" against it, lol. It's just that had trouble figuring out modules (especially alsa, argh) so I just threw everything in the kernel.

My concern is .... would a driver intended for a card work with an external box connected via usb2? If someone has actually gotten this exact combo to work already, I'll consider it.

Agreed. Part of my objection to the method I linked to in my posting is that he copies over the windows drivers to use in linux. Very strange. I didn't think one could run windows binaries in linux without wine or an emulator.
Perhaps I need to try another solution The file size limit problem could perhaps be solved by changing a partition to a file system that allows a larger files yet is still accessible from Windows ME. I know someone has recently created a ext3 driver for windows, but I seem to recall reading it is only for windows XP. Well: this idea digresses form the topic of this area of the forums so I'll have to persue it elsewhere (not in this thread).
In the meantime, if anyone actually gets that particular bit of hardware (as per the title, lol) to work from linux, please post here and let me know. Thanks. |
