|
|
Firstly, I have to say that gentoo is an execellent linux distribution, GREATE WORK!
But I got little problem with it, initially, I allocated 10Gb to gentoo, after using it for a while, there was only 1G left, I allocated another 5GB to gentoo, but amazingly, after only 1 month, I got only 82MB left. I didn't install any software after second allocation since I don't have an internet coonection.
below is what returns from "df" command:
yzhang@localhost ~ $ df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda7 16280556 15536136 82772 100% /
/dev/hda1 41186848 37912688 3274160 93% /mnt/win
none 387304 0 387304 0% /dev/shm
I am just wondering, what is eating the disk space? |

/usr/portage/distfiles will fill up pretty fast. All files in this are just tarballs of programs that are downloaded before installing them. You may have to re-download them later, but if this is not a problem for you, it is safe to delete anything in this directory.
/var/tmp might be getting full, too. Take a look at that. I believe anything in there is safe to delete.
To find what other directories are getting full, type "du -sh" followed by the name of a directory. If you see a directory that looks really full for unknown reasons, post it and we'll see if we can help.

I delete all files under /var/tmp, it frees up almost 1G disk space.
