I'm confused as to where I choose which kernel version to build. My make.profile points to a recent profile, but emerge still tries to build a 2.4 kernel. The development-sources mentioned in the sparc install guide don't exist any more. What am I missing here?
Thanks,
--Dean
Code:
livecd ~ # uname -a
Linux livecd 2.4.31-sparc #1 SMP Sat Jul 30 22:59:19 UTC 2005 sparc64 sun4u TI UltraSparc II  (BlackBird) GNU/Linux

Code:
livecd etc # ll -d /etc/make.profile
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 58 Nov 20 13:18 /etc/make.profile -> ../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/sparc/sparc64/2005.1/

Code:
livecd etc # emerge -a sparc-sources

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild  N    ] sys-kernel/sparc-sources-2.4.31-r2

Do you want me to merge these packages? [Yes/No] no

Code:
livecd ~ # emerge -s linux-headers

Several issues at work here:

1. since 2005.0, the 2.6 kernel is in fact the default profile - if there is no profile level specified you will have a 2.6-level profile.
2. sparc-sources only has 2.4 kernels; use gentoo-sources for sparc kernels above 2.4.x.

Leave the profile as it is, and allow for unstable kernels to be built:
Code:
echo "sys-kernel/gentoo-sources ~sparc" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
emerge gentoo-sources

The default sparc profiles do *not* specify a 2.6 kernel as they have not been reliable on enough hardware yet for us to feel comfortable with us releasing them to the masses. Things have been getting better of late, so hopefully that will soon be changing :)

Well, he says he can use gentoo-sources for his sparc; so what is the difference between gentoo-sources and sparc-sources ?
I have nothing even remotely like a Sparc, you understand - I'm just curious.

sparc-sources is based on the 2.4 vanilla kernels with grsec + any sparc specific patches that we feel are warranted. Gentoo-sources has a long and varied history, but with regards to 2.6, it is the intention to use that as a stock kernel for most users/arches with a minimal patchset (mostly bug and security fixes). This allows us to quickly patch a kernel for users that may have hardware or security issues before the next major kernel release.
