Hi all,
I'm about to start an install this week on an extra SB100 to replace an x86 box.
It will be used as my router(nat - cable modem)/firewall/webserver/bind/ntp - no gui.
I'll need to use a PCI nic in it. I've got several realtek 8139 based cards around (who doesnt?) but was unable to make them work in my old Ultra5 before I gave up.
must-haves are:
bind
some dyndns.org client
apache
ntpd
PCI nic working
any known gotchas with my setup?
tips for making the pci nic work?
known issues to be aware of these days? (havent done a NEW sparc install since the 1.4 days .. havent needed too ...) _________________ -Tim Smith

| Everything should be pretty straight forward, other than perhaps the card. We've started keeping a hardware compatibility list to document what non-Sun PCI hardware works for folks. So far it doesn't look like anyone that has tested that card has reported it, but there has been good luck with other cards.[/url] |

Well, the realtek card was autodetected on boot (in addition to the onboard) so thats a good sign. After I've passed packets over it for a few days I'll submit it for the HCL.
In building my system, I've noticed the docs tell me to still use devfs in my kernel .. is this accurate? No udev on sparc? (I'm going gentoo-sources 2.6.10ish) _________________ -Tim Smith

| Up to 2.6.13, you can run either. Our docs don't mention udev as we typically don't recommend 2.6 kernels for everybody as there are still issues with them on some systems that don't exist in 2.4 |
