Okay so I have been a Gentoo user since Oct last year. I love Gentoo. To anyone who asks what distro they should use I will suggest Gentoo and only Gentoo.

Lately some friends of mine have been talking about FreeBSD so much that I decided to try it out. So I download the latest RELEASE iso and decide to setup a mail server on FReeBSD.

In Gentoo except for maybe 1 or 2 apps every other app in portage compiles, installs and works. In FreeBSD half the apps in ports fails dusring compile. Cant find a library, or just make errors (but I can download and compile the SAME app just fine )

I am not trying to make this a FreeBSD sucks thread. I just have to say to all the Gentoo developers and maintainers .. you guy ROCK!! and Keep up the AWESOME work on this AWESOME distro

the thing i find so attractive about portage is that it detects the dependencies and tells you what is going on, andis very easy to use and keep your sytem up-to date.

On the box it said it was designed for Win XP or better, so why won't it work with Linux?

It's because you need to update the port tree by CVS or download and unpack by manual. FreeBSD's ports hasn't fail on me so far for a year..

What's so good about FreeBSD's ports? Gentoo's portage still needs to work more to catch up..

I agree with mezz.
Portage is not that stable as Ports at the moment. Don't compare Ports with an old tree to Portage with a new tree! With Ports I can build nearly everything (with an up-to-date tree). With Portage a lot of build failures happened to me (also with an up-to-date tree). Ports had a lot of time to evolve, but Portage is work in progress, don't forget that.
I switched back to FreeBSD because of that. But I will watch the development of Gentoo, it could become a great distro.

A broken ebuild or ten has nothing to do with Portage being better or bader than Ports.
