Here's a hint for everyone who gets this message at startup:

Code:
You are running Google Earth in 'OpenGL' with software emulation

I had it too, but it was easily fixed with:
Code:
opengl-update nvidia

(This is deprecated though, so you should probably check the eselect command from the gentoolkit package)

Don't forget to restart X afterwards.

Hmm I have the same problem with the fonts, but the link from you does not work...

Try the free r300 driver! Google Earth Linux is a bit slower than under Windows but it is not unusable.

Something was screwed up with DirectRendering, but now it works ;)

But I can't solve the font problem, is there a way to increase the font just manually? Because I have set display size in xorg.conf.

Ok you useless forum users, I found the solution for the font problem myself. 8)

Edit the following files:

-Font Size:
Code:
~/.googleearth/Registry/google/googleearthplus/User/render/guifontsize

-Font Family:
Code:
~/.googleearth/Registry/google/googleearthplus/User/render/guifontfamily

Greets and happy earth browsing!

I have a strange problem with Google Earth, not that big but I was curious if it's only me... So after startup only the upper part of the navigation windows has image (about 20%), and the status bar is right below this part that has the image. However, moving the cursor around in the lower part modifies the coordinates in the status bar. This can be quickly solved by turning on/off the sidebar or switching to fullscreen and back, but is still a little annoying.

Anyone else has this?

BTW, I have installed it from portage.

btw, has anyone tried replacing the libqt-mt.so.3 library file with a symlink to /usr/qt/3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3 ? or any of the other libraries that are already present on your system? if someone knows how to check whether it'll work ( e.g, how to find what compiler version was used to compile the googleearth version of the library ), please post it either here or in a new thread.

I was having the following problem when I first installed Google Earth with an ATI Radeon 9600 video card:

Code:
You are running Google Earth in 'OpenGL' with software emulation

The problem for me was that DRI was failing to initialize when X started.

My Xorg.0.log file said this:
Code:

(WW) fglrx(0): ***********************************************
(WW) fglrx(0): * DRI initialization failed!                  *
(WW) fglrx(0): * (maybe driver kernel module missing or bad) *
(WW) fglrx(0): * 2D acceleraton available (MMIO)             *
(WW) fglrx(0): * no 3D acceleration available                *
(WW) fglrx(0): ********************************************* *

and fglrxinfo said this:
Code:

display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.2.1)

The first thing I did was to emerge the newest ati drivers, and then make sure the following modules were installed and listed in my /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 file
Code:

agpgart
via-agp
ati-agp
fglrx

The one that I was missing was via-agp. ATI has a guide which finally got it working for me: http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/linux_8.12.10.html under the heading "X Fails to Load on Systems with Linux Kernel Version 2.6.x"

After I got those modules loaded and restarted X, my fglrxinfo said this:
Code:

display: :0.0  screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9600 Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.5695 (8.23.7)

and then Google Earth ran beautifully.

Hope that helps! :)

Also, the text across the bottom of the viewport is messed up, some letters display and others don't.

System is amd64, mostly from the stable tree. Running X.org 7.0 with nVidia's drivers on a 256mb GeForce 6500

Yes I have the same problem..with amd64 dual core and nvidia latest drivers.
?? Does anyone have a solution to this problem. ??
I also tried both versions.

     Homepage:            http://www.ati.com
Description:         Ati precompiled drivers for r350, r300, r250 and r200 chipsets

with my Mobility Radeon9700 on centrino laptop and Google Earth works fine, almost as fast as win version.
Maybe it's a problem related to sth. else ??

For me it was very easy to solve the font-problem

As it was posted before this command is everything you need ;-)
Code:
echo 12 > ~/.googleearth/Registry/google/googleearthplus/User/render/guifontsize

And that´s the result:
