might want to read "man shutdown", or one of the other man pages it recommends you also reading. |

There's also apm if your BIOS supports it.
You need to set various kernel options -- ask for more information if you want -- and then a command like $ apm -s puts the machine into power-saving mode.
I had this working perfectly with Gentoo 1.2 -- my machine was powered on all the time, but when I wasn't using it it just slept, making no noise and using little power. When I wanted it, I pressed a key and up it came in less than a second. Unfortunately, this has stopped working in Gentoo 1.4 -- I'm suspcious of certain kernel patches, but haven't proved anything yet. |
