Portage & the community. Gentoo has much better docs and user help than other distros. |

The best thing is that when I fix a bug, add a feature or otherwise modify a package I know that's the only thing that's changing - things won't start breaking because I had the effrontery to actually build a package myself. _________________ No more cruft

USE flags. Can build KDE only system or Gnome only system, or bare minium fluxbox type system. |

I love the fact that the install ends at a command prompt, and the guide ends with pointers to other things - maybe you want X, maybe samba, you might like Gnome or KDE etc. My Gentoo install is just that; MY gentoo install (and probably completely different to yours). Everything on it is something I've chosen to put there.
You've got to love the freedom of choice
The forums/community come in pretty high as well. You guys rock... |

RPM is the work of the devil!!!
I like Gentoo mostly for the ease of use.

Portage, portage.. Portage!
General configurability and it´s structure is very organized. I´ll probably never switch to another distribution as everything I want from one is in Gentoo. I like building things from source and customizing my system. As a bit of a techie I like playing with my systems. |

Portage is probably the biggest reason I like Gentoo. |

I like the flexibility of portage. It makes it VERY easy to add in custom packages that are fully managable through the system package manager. |

It always works. If it doesn't work by default, there are no bullshitty magical auto-setup tools to hack around. I fix whatever is broken and move on. So far, gentoo is the only distro to install and activate all hardware on every PC I've ever used (besides the little keys on some keyboards, and certain software modems). In short, I had an HP laptop, it wouldn't work with ANY modern distro but gentoo...
So, guess how I came to be a gentoo user. _________________ CPU: 3800+ X2 (2.5Ghz)

Portage, the awesome community, the excellent docs, and the overall no-frills, no-nonsense design simply continues to astound me. _________________ ~~ Peter: Programmer, Mathematician, STEM & Free Software Advocate, Enlightened Agent, Transhumanist, Fedora contributor

The community, and the fact taht if it doesn't work, I can make it work. It's what made me start using gentoo, and it's why I keep doing it. _________________ CPU: 3800+ X2 (2.5Ghz)

1. Customized optimizations for perfect ricing
2. Split KDE ebuilds allowing installation of only the apps I use.
3. Excellent documentation
4. Ease of system tweaks like Jackass!
5. Portage overlay for things like the pertty ebuilds.
6. USE flags
7. Ease of updates
8. Forums providing answers to almost any question one might ever have.
9. Curtis, whom I worship from afar, in a MOST homosexual way! _________________ Of course you can have my root password. I'm on Hardened! |

Well on top of how accessible it always has been for me, the package management system is the only one I can make sense of anymore. The others always seem to bug me... dunno. I'd need to get used to other distros and that's something I don't have time for. _________________ CPU: 3800+ X2 (2.5Ghz)

What I love most:
I have learned more about Linux from using (and installing) Gentoo then anywhere else.
Besides the fact that the Gentoo forums ROX!
EDIT : Oh ya I forgot Portage ! |
