also, now I am playing with it and I have noticed. that a kmix instance comes up when kde boots up. when I try to close it, it comes right back up. I also tried a killall -s 9 kmix, same thing, it closes then comes right back up without hesitation....

I actually managed to find a different post here. It traced the problem back to a service called kmilo. If you go to the control center then KDE components then service manager, disable kmilo and the Volume window went away.... From what I understand kmilo is the service you run if you want specal buttons on your keyboard (internet buttons etc) to run programs....

I got the same problem.
The volume dialog pops up at system start. But the major problem is:
My volume keeps running down to zero. I can use my special buttons to
push the volume up but its going down immediately.
When i disable the KMilo Service the dialog doesnt pop up anymore but
i cant use my special keys. The problem occured while upgrading the kernel...

Hi,

upgrading to KDE 3.5 brought no solution. I have to keep Kmilo disabled :(

Maybe have a look at this thread:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-315064-highlight-kmilo.html
its a dirty workaround but it helps...

Just wanted to add this started happening for me since suspend2-sources-2.6.14. I never used 2.6.13 but have a 2.6.12 image that works fine. Also, I'm using a Dell D600 laptop and followed some various tips across the net to get it's bits working. One of the things I did a while ago was patch the kernel to enable sofware suspend and other bits, including the volume buttons. This was in 2.6.9, when I used the s3_late_bios patch from here I got the same thing. So back tracked and have been living with out a working software suspend. So I wonder if there's something in the Suspend2 patches that's doing a similar thing.
Incedentally I am still able to use my volume buttons via the hotkeys package. Doc can be found here specific to my lap top. Hope this helps. Very happy about getting rid of that anoying window, also my suspend seems to work in 2.6.14, bonus!
