I had bad experiences with an 8500le on debian (even with dri)

Are there instructions for installing this card (its sapphire/ATI 8500le 128mb agp specifically)?

There are several threads regarding the 8500/9xxx ATI cards. Try searching for them.

The short:

emerge /usr/portage/media-video/ati-drivers-2.5.1-r1.ebuild

This installs the drivers from ATI.

Or, you can install XFree 4.3.0 and the xfree-drm drivers, which are currently masked.
