Does anyone else have this problem? Portage-2.0.47-r8 consistently spawns chgrp and chmod processes which just suck memory and make things take forever and a day to build....I think I have spent 30 minutes emerging a 36kb package...that's right...way too long...I'm sick of this crap......
Please!! Someone help me....In about an hour I'll probably hit swap and still not have an older version of portage emerged!!

Back on r5.....and only ate 80 Mb more memory to get there....portage now works like it's supposed to...r8 seems to be a load of crap...my advice...don't upgrade...use 2.0.47-r5.

Are you finding the spawning processes with ps? I don't seem to be having an issue. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Both top and ps....but it is relatively obvious when it takes 7 minutes for portage to start downloading a package after you type emerge <package>
r5 works fine...

I started emerging enlightenment with gtop running. I'm not seeing excessive processes running. The download started immediately too.
If there's nothing over at bugs already, this might be worth mentioning. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

same problem here... after upgrading to portage-2.0.47-r8 it took me ages to fetch (after 3 minutes or more it started downloading) and compile other packages.
i solved the whole problem by downgrading to portage-2.0.47-r7 |

its only happens if you use live-cvs ebuilds.
portage chmods /usr/portage/distfiles/cvs-src/ every time you emerge somthing!! |

Then that needs to change...it shouldn't be the portage developers who tell me if I get something out of cvs or not...so there is no reason at all for the portage user to own my cvs-src directory....and it shouldn't change those permissions every time I do anything with the portage system. That's simply bad programming on the part of the portage team. Perhaps in r9 that will be fixed, and our freedom returned Happily enjoying r5....The portage developers have done an excellent job on the world's best package management system though!
