Hm, this is getting out of my control.... i wonder if it ever was in my control
anyway. I have a sun ultra10, i have ofcourse a monitor but i dont have a keyboard. So after reading quite a bit in this forums and in the gentoo docs i found that i can use a console conection over serial interface. So this is what i am trying now trying to follow thiese instructions:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-sparc-faq.xml
How do i know that the box is actually working. I tryed connecting a monitor, all it says is that since no keyboard is detected, is that it will use ttya for input and output. what does this mean
Help please.. _________________ Doh |

Yes of course, ttya is com port A..... which is a DB25. and I don't have a convertor at the moment
Anyway, to connect to a console on a U10 is possible.. right? _________________ Doh |

ok, i´ll do another try on this thread.
Now i actually have a DB25 connector but i cant get it to work. any idea?
When you guys connect to a console using serial, does the prompt appear right away or is there some serious tweaking needed to make it work?
What terminal emulators are you guys using? i´m on winXP.

Any terminal program should more or less work (hyperterminal, tera term, etc) if you have the correct cable... If I'm not mistaken, you need a null-modem cable. (A cisco console cable will also work, I'm note sure though whether cisco console cable == null-modem cable)
Normally, no extra tweaking is required. (maybe your your bps should be 9600?) |

Yup teraterm is ok :]
And you need null-modem or adapters and rj-45 rolled cable.
After connecting just set new connection in your terminal on proper com and go :] Settings are 9600-8-1
Gd luck |

it feels like i have tried all different cables there is and i cant screw it up totally. so i start to beleive that maybe the box is actually broken. Well, there must be some reason for it to be put on a shelf anyway. Iäm just installing gentoo on an x86. but i wont give up yet.
Thanks for the replies.
