I will ask to the mplayer guys why thouse tools do not work with it.

I emerged this today. I have been looking for a transfer rate test.
The transfer rate works with my Lite-On "JLMS XJ-HD166S". But QPxTool displays the speed in CD speed. So the graph starts from 60X and then goes up above the upper limit so that I can not see it at all.
Is there a way for me to get it working? Do I just have to wait for some future release? Would be nice to have support NEC ND-2500A also...

By the way I unmasked it with the keyword ~amd64. Emerge worked without errors.

I don't think that this is a problem of qpxtool. Transfer rate test is running fine here with:
Toshiba SD-1612, Toshiba SD-1712, LG 4040B, LG 4163B, Plextor Premium, Plextor 712A

Check your qt-related stuff.

I have a fairly fresh install of gentoo right now. I haven't installed anything DVD related stuff besides k3b yesterday.
Do I need to emerge something else for the qpxtool to work? What exactly do you mean by other qt-related stuff?

Try as root. I suppose that you use the current version of qpxtool (0.4.2). First I would check, if the transfer rate problem occurs also with other cd/dvd drives. List the tested drives. To test qpxtool with knoppix is another possibility.
It could also be a graphical problem. Here I use qt-3.3.4-r8

qpxtool = 0.4.2
qt=3.3.4-r8

Drive= LiteOn 166s with hacked firmware. It reads faster than the stock firmware, which is perfect for transfer rate tests. The firmware reads DVD-R the same speed as DVD.
With qpxtool the transfer rate y-axis goes from 0-60. When I do the test with this drive, the test starts from 50. At about 150M (x-axis) the graph can't be seen anymore since it goes above the visible box.

:-[ READ failed with SK=3h/ASC=02h/ACQ=00h]: Input/output error

This is where it stops. At first I thought that it would not work at all. But then the test starts:
Code:
 LBA:   187136 /  2129360   1355.58kB/s (0.98x)

The test runs at constant 0,98X all the way.

Nero cdspeed2000 works with both these drives in Windows.
With Nero cdspeed the transfer rate graph size is dynamic. When I run a test there with the LiteOn, the y-axis scale changes after a while since it does not fit the window. Does qpxtool have the same feature? If not, I think it should.

I haven't tried burning anything in linux yet. But I know that they both can read DVDs ok.
DMA is enabled on both drives.

Let me know if there is anything else I can do.

This is really very curious, because qpxtool uses the standard mmc commands - so this is not really a problem of qpxtool. You could try a live linux like knoppix. Perhaps this will work.
What mainboard, chipset and kernel do you use?
QPxTool is in first view for Plextor drives. So don't expect too much for your drive. Maybe in a few weeks there will be an extension for other drives, but at the moment there is not time for that.

Mainboard: Asus K8N
CPU: AMD Sempron 2800+
Chipset: nForce3 250
Kernel: 2.6.14-gentoo-r5

The Lite-On is /dev/hdb
The NEC is /dev/hdc

Is qpxtool included with the knoppix cd?
Since I emerged qpxtool in amd64 bit, I don't think that the binary will work if I boot with knoppix and mount my gentoo disk.

I would try the tar-ball directly in knoppix.

Tested with Knoppix 4.0.2 and the tarball that you linked to.
I got the exact same results.

The transfer rate problem with non-Plextor drives is fixed in the next release. But it is not officially released yet.

Great!
Will the next release fix both of the problems that I have with the current release?
1. Lite-On going so fast that it can't be seen.
2. NEC 2500a going way too slow.

I don't have these drives, so I can't test it. But drives which showed too low cd transfer rate values are working fine now.
qpxtool-0.4.3 is now in portage

Nice work!
Finally there is a tool to do a transfer test in Linux with my LiteOn 166s!

Could it be possible to add some more tests for this drive? I know it is capable, even though it is not a burner.

Since most Plextor work has been done now, there should be time to implement other q-checks for other vendors. Keep on watching the project page.

Hei piewie

Have just downloaded the slackware tgz, converted it to a Slax 'mo' module, and its currently checking dvd+rw and dvd-ram transfer rates on my 4550a :-)

Will checkout 0.5.2 on Gentoo as soon as it reaches portage.

Mvh

Seems that the maintainer is not available at the moment. I wrote a mail to him with the information about the new version, but no answer so far. Normally it takes only a few hours until I get an answer from him and a few hours more until it is in portage. Perhaps he is on holiday? So I filled out a bug report for version bump, which was assigned to the maintainer again - so nothing happened until now.
