I'd like to see if anyone can reproduce this bug. I'm using the 31.23 nvidia drivers and XFree86 4.3 with Gnome 2.2. I have the new XRender enabled cursor themes turned on (whiteglass for instance). I start to draw a selection box on the desktop and the system hardlocks. I can't reproduce the problem with the nv driver, or with core cursors turned on. The 41.91 nvidia driver doesn't have the problem, but it also has sporadic idling at random times. Does anyone else have this problem?

I have a similar problem with nautilus under Fluxbox. If I try to drag select items in nautilus the computer hangs.

Using:
nVidia 3123
XFree86 4.3.0 -> Whiteglass theme
Nautilus 2.2.1

I can also confirm this, both on the desktop and in a nautilus window.

nvidia: 3123
nautilus 2.2.0.2
XFree86 4.3.0 - whiteglass cursor theme

I had two hard freezes this last two days, also with xfree-4.3.0, nvidia divers 3123, gnome-2.2 and whiteglass cursors. But I don't use nautilus or desktop. I was not able to find an easy way to reproduce this crash though. Now I'm running without the RenderAccel option, and also without the CursorShadow (which is useless with whiteglass), and it has been stable for several hours. Iwill do some more tests, including nautilus, this evening.

I still can't reproduce this bug anymore, even drawing some selection boxes on a nautilus desktop. So maybe one my changes in XF86Config is a real solution:
Code:
Section "Device"
<snip>
        Option      "CursorShadow"   "off"
        Option      "RenderAccel"     "false"
EndSection

Are you guys using a 2.4.x or 2.5.x kernel?

Perhaps try the nv XFree86 driver - it supports full 2D acceleration ... and is zippy on 4.2.x, can't see why it wouldn't be likewise (or better) on 4.3.0

yes, but no chance of accelerated 3d. I'm using 2.4.20 by the way.

TGL, do you notice any slowdown due to non accelerated render extension? (i.e with antialiased fonts or with the transparent cursors)

I experienced lockups and crashes when I had:

Code:
Option "RenderAccel" "True"

enabled, but after I disabled it everything ran normal.

herbie: I really can't say that I see a difference (without the RenderAccel), no... but I've never been very receptive to "desktop performances"... For example, I can't see any difference between fluxbox and sawfish in terms of window switching time, whereas almost everybody say that fluxbox is incredibly fast. So you would better try it yourself than ask me ;)

All I can say is that without RenderAccel, X is stable again, as mae2050 has confirmed.

... there IS a problem with the 4191-drivers and gnome/nautilus (kde works fine) even the programmers of Nvidia in the NVNews-Forum do admit that (and they should know). And this has nothing to do with setting "RenderAccel" (believe me - tried that) For me the problem went away when i switched to Xfree86 4.2.99.4, don't know why, but am happy about. So: XFree 4.2.1 + 4191-drivers + Gnome/Nautilus is still a no-go.

That cames from this thread:

Using 31.23 drivers and X4.3. Using the RenderAccel false option stops the lockups on my system. But it does slow things down slightly. I would rather nvidia just release some new drivers to resolve these problems instead of relying on users to find ways around them.

I still have freezes, but under KDE...

Tried NVidia 1.0.4191-r1 and 1.0.3123, tried different Cursor-Themes, enabled/disabled RenderAccel, tried the "nv" driver....
But still, nearly everytime I switch to a tty, my system freezes total, only a reset helps...
It happens in 3D-games sometimes too.
Another strange thing is, that my 3D-performance is extremely bad.. when i tried it some weeks ago, I think it was XFree4.2.x there, I had around 1600fps with glxgears... now I have at most 620fps...

Kernel: 2.4.20-gentoo-r1
Graphiccard: Geforce2MX200
CPU: AMD XP 2000+
MoBo: Soyo K7V Dragon plus

Thx 4 help and sorry 4 my English ;))

Greetings

Elias P.

The lock of X is caused by nautilus 2.2 when using X >/= 4.2.99 (icm with nvidia's drivers), dont know if it has been fixed though, turning off redner accel may help (4191 doesnt use X render accel anymore, and it doesnt crash with nautilus)
