kde 3.1 problems

I just upgraded to kde 3.1 and now when I start it, I get all sorts of errors, and all of the icons on the desktop are gone, and when I try to run something from the kicker, the kicker just disappears and then it and the program it was supposed to run just crash. did anyone else have this problem? how to fix it?
