I think it's so that if you accidentally put /boot rather than / in your grub.conf when you have a seperate boot partition, it will still work.
Many Linux distros (such as Slackware) do not promote using a seperate boot partition the way Gentoo does. By including the boot link, the same config file will work whether you have a seperate boot partition or if you are booting from your root partition. _________________ "Pssht. Extreme sports.
