OK, I've ALMOST got this working, I just need gnome-window-decorator so I can actually move stuff around. I emerged gnome-session and control-center and have the gnome USE flag set, but compiz is still refusing to build it. What else do I need to do to get it compiled?

Hi folks,

I cant uplaod a screenshot becouse my ftp is down for the next couple of days... sorry....

The problem that I'mhaving is that when I start xgl it does not render the window borders. No title bar or anything. Anybody else have this problem?

Here is the ouput from the terminal if it helps....

Ah right, THATs why all my keys have changed!

I spend so much time with badly configured Linux boxes at work, that when the wrong characters started appearing I just compensated automagically!!!

I've also got it working with the ATI drivers. It's looks pretty good. The only downside for me is that for some reason the Mono-Beagle daemon starts consuming 100% CPU. I've not investigated enough to prove it's Xgl, but it only started misbehaving when I ran it for the first time!

Cheers
Ferg

You probably also need libwnck (at least that was the problem for me)

Yeah I'm emerging gnome right now and somewhere along the way I got compiz to finally compile gnome-window-decorator. But when I started Xgl, then compiz, then gnome-window-decorator, it didn't do a whole lot, my window decorations still didn't show up and I could move anything, my key bindings are still screwed up.

At any rate, let me just ask if it's NECESSARY to have gnome installed to get a working xgl environment? I'd like to continue using fvwm2, but that doesn't seem to be working real well...

It seems like everyone is having better luck with the ATI drivers....

Is this correct? If so I think I'll try again on another ystem that has an ATI radeon 9800 pro

If you vant all the cool effects I think for the moment you have to use compiz => GNOME

Any one else have issues with DBus?

Another issue : compiz segfault with "wobbly"

Bear in mind that at the moment, Xgl and Compiz were developed primary by a Novell employee. Novell use GNOME, therefore their priority has been to make it blend well into a GNOME environment. I'm sure full KDE support won't be long in coming, as it doesn't look hugely difficult to write a window decorator that at least works even if it's not hugely pretty at the moment. There's plenty of time after all, Xgl itself is only barely on the usable side.

As for why you might not get any decorations - did you start compiz with the decoration plugin? You'll need something like

Code:
compiz decoration move resize place

at a minimum if you want to move, resize and get decorations, and have a vaguely sane window placement algorithm. After that try adding other plugins like fade, scale (if that loads, try pressing F12 for Exposé-like goodness), wobbly etc. They may not all work but have a go.

Yes sir I surely did, I don't know if it's because I don't have gnome loaded or what. I got it so I could load Xgl, then startup fvwm and when I'd load glxcompmgr with wobbly, I'd see the windows shimmer, but then I wasn't able to move them around at all. I'm emerging gnome now, so we'll see if that makes things work a little better...

Hi,

I finally managed to get the kde-window-decorator compiling and running too. You definitively need:

1) QT 4
2) qmscreen.moc and qmwindow.moc
3) Change Hanno's ebuild, remove the --disable-kde flag

Still it does not have much functionality, but at least you get to see all the effects going.

Cube is really impressing 8O

I am using KDE 3.5.1 and X.Org 7.0, Nvidia 6600 GT, Composite Extension disabled.
For those who want to give it a try, I post some hints:

1) Emerge QT4. Add x11-libs/qt to your /etc/portage/package.keywords file, then:

Code:

emerge =x11-libs/qt-4.1.0-r2

2) Emerge everything as described in the HOWTO http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_XGL

(For me I was not able to emerge Mesa and XGL and had to apply the patches contained in pijalu's
archive http://users.skynet.be/muaddib/my-xgloverlay-20060210.tar.bz2, namely
mesa-glx-x11-glxproto-defines.diff (for Mesa and XGL). Did somebody else have this problem?)

3) Now how to get the kde-window-decorator (ok, it's a hack). You can use this slightly modified ebuild

compiz-20060211.ebuild

Code:

# Copyright 1999-2006 Gentoo Foundation
# Distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License v2
# $Header: /var/cvsroot/gentoo-x86/media-libs/glitz/glitz-0.4.4.ebuild,v 1.6 2006/01/04 23:23:46 halcy0n Exp $

inherit eutils cvs

ECVS_SERVER="cvs.freedesktop.org:/cvs/xorg"
ECVS_MODULE="app/compiz"
ECVS_LOCALNAME="compiz"
S=${WORKDIR}/${ECVS_LOCALNAME}

DESCRIPTION="compiz composite manager"
HOMEPAGE="http://xorg.freedesktop.org"
LICENSE="X11"
SLOT="0"
KEYWORDS="~x86 ~amd64"
IUSE=""

DEPEND="media-libs/mesa
        x11-libs/libXevie
        x11-libs/startup-notification"

src_compile() {
        cp ${FILESDIR}/qwmwindow.moc ${S}/kde/window-decorator/
        cp ${FILESDIR}/qwmscreen.moc ${S}/kde/window-decorator/
        ./autogen.sh --host=${CHOST} \
                --prefix=/usr \
                --infodir=/usr/share/info \
                --mandir=/usr/share/man \
                || die

        emake || die
}

src_install() {
        make DESTDIR="${D}" install || die
}

You need these 2 files qwmwindow.moc and qwmscreen.moc. To get them, move to the compiz
source directory, into compiz/kde/window-decorator/ and execute:

Code:

moc qwmwindow.h -oqwmwindow.moc
moc qwmscreen.h -oqwmscreen.moc

Now move qwmwindow.moc and qwmscreen.moc into your compiz overlay directory, x11-wm/compiz/files and execute:

Code:

emerge compiz

Here you are 8)

Now you can start Xgl, KDE and run

Code:

kde-window-decorator

before testing compiz.

It will not allow you to move any windows except via the Alt+left click and Alt+richt-click shortcuts

For those who want to have a second KDM Login to test XGL, you just might want to change:

/usr/kde/3.5/share/config/kdm/kdmrc

Add (for nvidia, ati owners change accordingly):
Code:

[X-:1-Core]
ServerCmd=/usr/bin/Xgl -br -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv -fullscreen

This allows you to login to KDE/XGL on a second screen. Logout and restart XDM service to use
this.

Werner

PS.: I noticed that kcompmgr works on XGL even tough Composite extension is disabled in xorg.conf and
is really stable. Slower than normal tough.

Just read something on suse xgl page, maybe this can have some help for people on nvidia getting black screen:
openSUSE wrote:

NVIDIA / proprietary driver "nvidia"

* OpenGL acceleration does not work well with Composite being active. This option in /etc/X11/xorg.conf should be disabled if it had been enabled before. Note: Xgl supports Composite anyway, even if it is disabled in xorg.conf. FBO's can be used with this driver instead of pbuffers for XVideo acceleration. Enable this by changing DISPLAYMANAGER_XGL_OPTS="-accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv:pbuffer" to DISPLAYMANAGER_XGL_OPTS="-accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv:fbo" in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager

in one word: cut composite ext and set accel params as
-accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv:fbo

Don't think this has any help... but worst a try

You need to also run gnome-window-decorator to get window decorations. To be able to use the window decorator you need to emerge gnome-light (or at least control-center+libwnck and then re-emerge compiz.

Ow and nvidia works without a hitch for me... I just need to figure out how to change the transparency on the fly and I'll be happy.

Emerging gnome will work just as well as gnome-light right? I've got control-center, I'll make sure libwnck is installed and then trying rebuilding compiz, here's hoping.

And I think you can use transet/transet-df and bind it to ctrl-middle mouse or some such for happy good transparency

Yeah emerging the whole of gnome should also work.

I will look into transset. Does anyone know the keycombo for zoom in and out BTW?

All the keybindings can be defined with gconf-editor!
Just look in /app/compiz/ :D
