Would that be kde-meta on a new installation?

no, it was a full world emerge. basically i hadn't updated in a while, had to update my toolchain, so i figured i may as well rebuild everything using the new glibc (and i think the other one was gcc). i use KDE, but i don't mess with the meta "install everything!"

btw, i made it through all of them without a single death error. i can't recall anytime i've done a significantly large emerge job without a hitch.

Count yourself lucky - I have to do 554! Fortunately I have a pretty fast machine, so it only takes about a day...

I also have over 500 and a fast amd64 machine. The last time I tried "emerge -eD world", only two didn't work.

I have had awesome success with emerging things, any failures were due to errors on my part (typos in make.conf, argh!)

Hey, you're right - it is a really good system. Isn't it odd how it's human nature to pick out all the bad points of the system we're on at the moment, and then in the future when we're picking out the bad points of whatever new system we find ourselves with, we look back on the old one and say "Hey, that was pretty damn good!"

I'm on 1 of 122 right now updating Gnome. Funny thing is, even through all that, I only had to set two USE flags .

I need to reduce my system's bloat - I installed KDE a while back because Gnome was acting up, but it wasn't any better - I need to figure out how to unmerge it safely...

Be careful when you do this though. revdep-rebuild has a bad habit of removing necessary system packages that may leave your system unusable. If it does, all you have to do is boot from liveCD, chroot to your system and emerge system but it's a pain in the ass. So look over the list of packages revdep wants to remove before you let it do anything.

I assume you are talking about the depclean part. AFAIK revdep-rebuild never removes anything, just rebuilds stuff.
