libz.so.1 missing??

I installed gentoo for one thing.
to get ardour cvs gracefully working (for what it's worth)
When I did this emerge, I didn't expect it to rebuild all kinds of things like gcc and glibc.
About half way through it choked (on my dual athlon). So I stopped it and tried to repair damage.
I am missing libz.so.1
re-emerging zlib did not install it.
Any Ideas??
