Hey all,

I'm using KDE 3.5 beta at the moment but this problem also occurred when i used 3.4.2. Sound works fully except for artsd. When I use an external alsaplayer for the notifications, they work, but arts is not. It worked when i initially installed kde but I'm not sure what changed. There is no error message, just no sound. Any ideas?

Try removing the .kde folders, might help. Also checking your sound server setting in the control centre, but I assume you've tried that...

What messages get displayed when running artsd in console?

I've done your two pieces of advice already to no avail, but i did find this when running it from the konsole:
When running artsd from the konsole it appears to run normally...
Code:

erichare@BlueBox ~ $ artsd

but still no sound.

EDIT: Whoa... I tested one of the OGG files in the kcontrolcenter and this appeared:

mimetype application/octet-stream unsupported

(in the konsole)

Hmm... sounds like you are missing an plugin for artsd.

Are you using split ebuilds for KDE?

You have to make sure arts is compiled with the correct useflags. There should be an "ogg" or "vorbis" useflag somewhere.

However, I would suggest using an external player. "play" from the sox package is a quite good alternative for this job, and it runs much faster (with artsd when I click a button that should generate a noise, I hear the noise 4 seconds later  ).

I'm using an external player right now (alsaplayer), I'm mostly trying to solve this problem for the sake of understanding why something isn't working as it should be. Take a look at this output:

Code:
BlueBox erichare # emerge -pv arts

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild   R   ] kde-base/arts-3.5_beta1  +alsa +arts +artswrappersuid -debug -esd -hardened -jack +kdeenablefinal +mp3 -nas +vorbis -xinerama 0 kB

Total size of downloads: 0 kB
BlueBox erichare #

Indeed a strange problem but you are not alone. My arts won't produce any sound either.

I just don't care because I disabled arts in the control center and I'm not using it.

I heard the development of arts has been stopped anyways.
