well i started it last night and i wokeup and checked the pc it was stuck on something. so i killed it ^z and restarted it. then i had to kill it again to use the pc. Is it safe to ^z or ^c then doing emerge gnome again??

thats mainly my question. my pc is a 1.0ghz athlon, and its taking quite a while..

As far as I know, you can ^C and restart safely. See here for more. You could also run it in the background. BTW, just because it's paused for a while, doesn't mean it's stuck. :wink:

ahh thanks :)

but what i'm doing is ctr Z, restart the computer and boot to WINXP. Then i will go back and type emerge gnome. I dont think the fg command will work since its been rebooted. right? 8O

I'm a bit confused. When you say it got stuck, you mean it was still compiling, but you wanted to use the machine to do something else? ^z will suspend a job, not kill it. If you ^z, then later resume it (with fg), it should be fine, unless you do something tricky. By tricky I mean emerge something else maybe, or change your USE flags, things like that. Otherwise, it should be fine.

Killing the could cost you a bit of time, since the package that was being compiled will start over again (except for the download), but other than that it should be fine (IMHO), with the above caveats.

\edit Sorry, overlapping emails. If you reboot after ^z, but before fg, it's about the same as ^c. Should be fine. Get gnome up, so you can stop dual booting! It's a crutch! :D \edit

LOL i posted this in desktop enviorment and gets moved twicd :)

qwkbrnfox ok so i guess i have nothin to worry about :) i would get gnome up but i need to use the pc and its takin forever to emerge gnome :x I had it on all last night..
