Well, if you're after setting up Gentoo on the Windows 2000 boot menu, go here https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=37586 (it seems I keep refering to that post :))

I'm assuming you want to boot Gentoo from the 2000 Bootmenu. However if you want to use Lilo or Grub, then there are plenty of details around on setting those up with Windows to dual-boot.

Ah, okay, I'm following now.

Yes, you can dual boot Gentoo and Windows the same way you dual boot Windows and Red Hat. You'll need to set up the chainloader section of Grub, but there are instructions on how to do that in the install guide, I think.

I'd recommend Gentoo if you've got the time and the patience (everything is compiled from source so it takes a while to install something), but the reward is a fast optimized system.

In other words, yup, by all means, install Gentoo and see what you think :) Come back here if you want a hand with different dual booting methods.

Well in this case you might want to play with one of the "easy" distros, like mandrake, SuSE, RedHat etc. Play a little and then install "la mas cojonuda": Gentoo

I wouldn't recommend Gentoo for first Linux install

Ergodic,
Gentoo isn't really all that difficult for a first distribution. It just requires a lot of patience, and people coming from the M$ world probably aren't used to waiting a few hours (or two days for me for KDE :)) for their system software to be installed. Assuming you follow the instructions correctly, you'll generally have a successful installation, at least that's what I've found.
