Any chance to get ATI 2.5.1 drivers work with XF 4.3.0?

You have to use the DRI drivers with Xfree 4.3.
http://dri.sourceforge.net/

I don't know whether anyone has created an ebuild for those or the ATI (radeon 8500+) drivers are already included in Xfree 4.3 sources.

Do you know this for a fact? Or are you just guessing? :)

I know by fact that the ATI binary drivers don't work with XFree 4.3. I'm running DRI drivers with my Radeon 8500 & Xfree 4.3.

simply emerge xfree merges an old version, 4.3.0 is not yet into "stable" tree, so you have to emerge /usr/portage/x11-base/xfree/xfree-4.3.0.ebuild directly (or whatever the package is called)

uh, i merged it with --nodeps and it works fine. also because of this freetype error. got a newer one than it wanted to merge.

edit: i mean i merged xfree with --nodeps, not freetype

Well, I have a little prob:

Since Upgrading to XFree 4.3 the more, less, bar key doesn't work anymore under X, while there's no problem at the console. Any suggestions anyone? (german keyboard layout)

there are loads of xkb (keyboard related) config files that needs to be updated (run etc-update and see) if you emerge the new xfree. Try etc-update and see if it solves your problems.

Just updated to XFree 4.3, and had problems with kdm hanging. I was running 4.2.99.902 before, so this was surprising. Browsed the forums and it seems like I needed to emerge fontconfig after emerging XFree 4.3.

Maybe this is something for everyone to do to avoid problems.

why not just
Code:
xrandr -s <res>

you dont even have to list the resolutions in XF86Config

DONT emerge it with --nodeps, just add the ACCEPT_KEYWORDS bit to your make.conf

Excuse me for being an idiot. To get hardware acceleration for my Voodoo5, I had to emerge xfree (4.2.1), emerge glide-v3, and emerge xfree again. I had trouble comprehending why I had to do this... will I have to do it again to upgrade to xfree-4.3.0?

So which drivers are better? ...if I plan on playing games for example..?
Is there a point installing older X and ATI's binaries?

I don't know why the ATI drivers aren't working with 4.3. It's possible that they use hooks in the x core that are now 'deprecated.' The MGA drivers(matrox g400 max is what I have) work fine with 4.3 for me.

im compiling xfree 4.3 now and this message came up

Code:

 * /usr/portage/sys-devel/perl/files/libperl_rebuilder
 * is provided to assist with this.
 * PLEASE DO NOT INTERRUPT THE RUNNING OF THIS SCRIPT.
 * Part of the rebuilding of applications compiled against
 * your old libperl involves temporarily unmerging
 * them - interruptions could leave you with unmerged
 * packages before they can be remerged.

im not sure if its doing ne thing..does ne one know what it is doing

thanks

Hmmm... I expect its re-compiling all your old perl modules, or apps emerged against the old libperl. Bit unusual that its come up during the xfree emerge, was libperl one of the depedancies in emerge -p xfree ?

I tried some if the new icon themes, but I've forgotten what the old setting was  Could someone tell me what the default contents for the file:

Code:

/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/default/index.theme

are? Thanks for your help

Xfree 4.3 starts very slow. Is that a common problem?

The first time I startx after installing, it was VERY slow to start. After that, it was as fast as ever.
