I have had problems in the past where every so often after emerging a package portage would try to auto-clean my system, consequently removing almost all important programs, and upon rebooting, either nothing works or the system won't reboot. This has happened twice.
Recently I noticed that it tried to do it again, but I killed portage before it had a chance to auto-clean. When I looked at the list of packages it was going to unmerge, it looks like it was going to only get rid of outdated packages (i.e. if I installed kde 3.1 and 3.0.5a it would get rid of just 3.0.5a). 3.1 would be listed under protected (but not omitted). It looks like it is safe to emerge clean but I'm not sure if this is the same thing that happened to me before or if the bug was fixed when I emerged a new version of portage.
Any help would be great - I don't want to end up screwing my whole system over again. |

One way to test would be to manually clean the versions, then run an emerge -pc _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |
