I did install a few days ago with gcc3.1. I did install X, fluxbox, galeon, xmms, postfix... well.
The problem is that sometimes login don't work. I mean, i logout and login: doesn't appear. Or i login and it freezes and some seconds later, it shows a timeout.

I was trying to do something now, seen than login was failing, i needed to add a user into a group and did...
Code:

moo tux # usermod -G cdrw tux

It freezed. So...
Code:

moo tux # usermod -G cdrw tux
(lots of crap)
close(5)                                = 0
munmap(0x401d9000, 4096)                = 0
getpid()                                = 31808
rt_sigaction(SIGPIPE, {0x40136170, [], 0x4000000}, {SIG_DFL}, 8) = 0
socket(PF_UNIX, SOCK_DGRAM, 0)          = 5
fcntl64(5, F_SETFD, FD_CLOEXEC)         = 0
connect(5, {sin_family=AF_UNIX, path="/dev/log"}, 16) = 0
send(5, "<86>May 31 01:31:10 usermod[3180"..., 67, 0 <unfinished ...>

It freezes in this send. What's wrong with metalog? Is the problem metalog related?
Please help if you can. Login problems aren't exactly nice :/

familiar problem, had it a month or so ago when using gcc 3.x. Had something to do with pam (or a module of pam) not compiling, (which still result in a succesful emerge). But I can't remember what I fixed, I don't have the problem anymore,......but well I rebuild it a few times in between.....

Sorry lX

Have you found any more about this? I encountered this problem yesterday evening. Discovered the logged out user was still owning a fam process. Killing the process allowed login as usual.
So may be off topic for the forum.... I am not using GCC3.
I have only just started running fam so it could be a simple mis-configuration. Haven't had time to dig further, Gentoo is on my home machine and I'm at work (W*****s) :(

I'm having the same problem with a lot of applications... not only login. They freeze and the solution is to restart metalog. Is metalog somehow fucked?

Good change it got something to do with /dev/log, and I can remember something about metalog creating it, but I'm not sure, not at my gentoo box at the moment. I edited my metalog conf file once and made a mistake (hung my system completly).
