No Sound any where

I can't hear any sound from any of my programs (xmms,gaim,games...)
I have SDL installed and can't remember what mixer, I check the mixer and the sound was up. I had it working one time with slackware. If I remember right I had to change permisions on something.

add the user to the audio group, (can edit /etc/group file directly or else check forum for use of usermod)
