Greatings,

I've been searching for 2 hours for information prior to this post and didn't find any answers, just similar problems.

I have a Toshiba 4280 Laptop (P3-500, 320MB RAM) with a PCMCIA Realtek 8139 Network Card (it's NOT a wireless card). On Red Hat 8.0, the 8139too module is used and works. I am using stage 1 of Gentoo 1.4_rc2 install CD for this install.

Following the install instructions:
Boot with the install CD.
The PCI modules configuration for the network card doesn't work because PCMCIA is still off.
"modprobe pcmcia_core" up to "cardmgr -f" works and the card's 100MBit light turns on.
I try to modprobe again with 8139too (and 8139cp), without success: "...unkown interrupt pin A..."; I'm not sure exactly what I am doing, I have been trying different combinations..
Well, then I try to configure the network (dhcp) with net-setup and dhcpcd to eth0. No errors.
With ifconfig I still have 127.0.0.1.
Ok, so I try to restart eth0 (/etc/init.d/net.eth0 restart) and I get "eth0: unknown interface: No such device...".

What now? I can't find more info. I really appreciate help on this one.

Thanks!

Try passing "acpi=off" (sans quotes) to the kernel at boot time. (This CAN cause the kernel to panic during boot). The ACPI driver is buggy, and often hogs the memory and IO spaces normally used by PCMCIA, because it does not properly detect the amount of RAM in the PC.

You may want to run lspci to take a look at your PCI configuration. try running cardctl to see if the card is properly detected.

Finally, run dmesg and post the output here.

I had no problems installing pcmcia networking following the exact instructions on the install site. Redhat would use the xircom-cb module for my RBEM56, but gentoo didn't need that, it worked fine with:
Quote:
# modprobe pcmcia_core
# modprobe i82365
# modprobe ds
# cardmgr -f

and you should be fine.
You can find more information on http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-1.4_rc2-install.xml, but of course you knew that already

I passed acpi=no to the kernel, or should I have used "=off"?; "=no" is what is in the instructions (pressing F2).

I forgot to tell that modprobe i82365 does output errors, related to Pins A and B.

Here are the outputs (after moosesocks' sugestions):

Sorry to put in everything, I'm no guru, so I'm not sure exactly what matters.
