emerge -u world basically updates all the software on your system. Most of the time it won't take all that long because large numbers of packages aren't usually updated all at once.
It's basically the eqiuvalent of apt-get update (or whatever the command is) in Debian. _________________ --

Hi
Try "emerge world --deep -up".
--deep instructs emerge to calculate the dependencies in a much more comprehensive manner. |

It uses the file /var/cache/edb/world to determine which software is on your system, and compares it with the latest unmasked release available in portage. If the portage version is different to the installed version, it will prompt you to either upgrade or downgrade. It also checks all of your system files (you can check these spearately by emerge system -up) and will update those as well. I am not 100 percent sure, but the system files are very similar to the files that are installed when you bootstrap doing a normal install. Basically the "essential" files to get your system running. _________________ We used to have hominid cousins that were vegetarian. Before running "emerge -u --deep world", you have to update the portage-tree. When installing Gentoo, you have to run "emerge rsync" . With that command you download the portage-tree. The packages that will be installed are the newest stable packages, according to the portage-tree. If you run "emerge sync", your portage-tree will be updated and will contain a new list with stable and unstable packages.
So, always run "emerge sync", than "emerge -up --deep world" (-p = pretend-option, it gives the list of packages for updating) and than run "emerge -u --deep world". _________________ Groeten uit Holland |
