|

The Source for Homeworld is released.
Anyone gotten it to work?
Homeworld-SDL is a port that tries to get Homeworld running under linux. It seems he's succeded.
System requirements is:
A copy of the original Windows version of Homeworld, patched to version 1.05 - 233 MHz Pentium II or better x86-based CPU - OpenGL-compatible 3D accelerator card - GCC 3 or later (currently won't work with 2.95.x) - SDL 1.2.6 or later
(Patched too 1.05 is stupid since then you'd need windows to get the data to be the correct version.) |

You need windows or wine to install the game, before you apply the patch. |

he didn't say anything about playing homeworld in wine, just that you can install it and update to 1.05 using wine |

yeah yeah ok... bite to fast, I can unzip it with unzip too since I already have it zipped from my old win install.. all I said was that it's stupid to require the latest patched version and not provide it in tar.bz2 or other format.
But I really do hope homeworld-sdl moves onward thowards the greatness of Freespace 2 (which I have yet to get working) |

Is no body interested in this game? -- I played it on windows recently and its really a fantastic game and now that its opensource and works on Linux, surely it could be just as great as enemy territory or freeciv, why isnt anyone playing this? |

It doesn't look like the Homeworld port is being maintained past its alpha state of 1.5 years ago. We have to jump through silly hoops ("register at the Relic Developers Network") to get the source code, to be able to install the game.
It looks like one might as well play Homeworld 2 under Cedega - it doesn't currently work under Wine.
There are other space games, albeit not quite the same: Descent, Freespace 2, Oolite |
