All those new to the amd64 scene have some trouble getting Gentoo started on the arch.
This is a boostrapped from stage 1, ready to go Gentoo with fluxbox as window manager package.
Unpack with
tar -xvjpf gen2+.tbz2
You just have to do a passwd from chroot and a grub install.
Don't forget to setup /etc/conf.d/net
I even included a kernel with reiser4 support in /boot, but it is recommended you compile your own.
Do a double TAB in the command line to find out what packages are installed.
Some of them are mc, vim, urxvt (for unicode), graveman (for CD/DVD burning), nmap, iptraf, ...
All this is on a VERY fast FTP.

Speed depends on the client's download pipe as well, not just the server's link to the Net. Also, geographic distance plays a role too. I bet if I access this "very fast" server from Singapore (look that up on the map please ), it would not be so speedy after all. |

You are right.
You SHOULDN'T use untrusted sources.
But hey, everybody's free to use it or not. The choice is up to them.
I like helping out, this is why I do it.
Anyway, you can check it out yourself.
BTW. You are right as to the speed. But if you are on a 100M or 1G network, the distance doesn't really do much difference. Sure, the closer the better, but hey. It's not as important as to put up some mirrors for it.

I hate to tell you but your connectivity sucks to me in the US. I have a machine with two gigs of internet bandwidth and I'm topping out at 350KBytes/sec.
FWIW, I usually nab full kernel tarballs in about a second and a half.
Ah well.
If you're overly concerned about security, but want to see what the man put together, I'd do the following:
Download and untar the stuff.
Check the make.conf for issues.
rm -rf /usr/portage && emerge sync
emerge -euD world
Check /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow
Enjoy.

this might be a good way for me to test encrypted filesystems... _________________ Knowledge is power.

Please do a traceroute, and check YOUR hops and localisation of kernel.org and mine.
Try to read up before writing anything about a subject you definitely know little about. |
