I realize that this topic has been discussed at length on this board, because I did a search and read through all pertinent topics, but a solution for my particular twist has not been mentioned.

Here's the problem: I run the latest version of ALSA and XMMS with Gnome (so no Arts). Before yesterday, XMMS, as well as any other sound application, could play sounds through my sound card. Yesterday I did "emerge world", which updated everything. Since then, XMMS would freeze as soon as I pressed Play and begin eating 100% of the CPU until I did "killall xmms".

Seeing that it's a modules problem, I recompiled the kernel, reinstalled the kernel modules, re-emerged alsa-driver, updated modules, and restarted. Startup messages indicate that my driver was started successfully. I can currently play my music through mpg123 and mplayer with no problem. Even after re-emerging "alsa-xmms", however, XMMS still refuses to play my music. Running it from the root console does not yield any error messages.

Any help is appreciated.

if I'm not wrong while tring to fix a bug on xmms-r15, I read that an
Code:
emerge -u world

can cause all ebuilds to be downgraded, like the r19 ebuild for xmms, to the only way not to re.ebuild everything is to start:
Code:
emerge -u -U world

hope this can help you somehow.

Peach.

I was using the search engine of the forums, because I have a similar problem, and, I find this post.

I think I can help with this (if noone do it yet)

Just emerge xmms-arts and select the output plugin called "arts" in the preferences of xmms :)

But now, my problem is very similar, It is a conflict between arts and mplayer, I have readed that it may have a solution:

search for ~/mplayer/config, and set kind "arts" on any option (I dont know what yet...) Im going to try it when IM at home.

Edited: The solution for mplayer-arts thread:
in mplayer.config: just change ao=sdl whit ---> ao=arts

Byez (and sorry about my english :P)
