The 0.8 ebuild works fine on my amd64, so I think you can add ~amd64 to the keywords :)

Has this been implemented? I didn't see it in the preferences, and I use to read manga only... :-p
Thanks for your work!

I'll add ~amd64 to the keywords. :)

The option is called "Flip position of pages in double page mode".

Wow RiBBiT, comix is really coming along nicely. 0.8 just seems like such a great improvement from whatever version it was almost a week ago. :)

Any chance of an option to remember the page you were on when you close?

Thank you. I guess I do release new versions quite often, but I just think it is more fun to write the program than to read the darn comics. :wink:

You could use the bookmark feature to save the archive/page, and then load it the next time you start Comix. I could add an option to always load the page you were reading when you closed the application, if you think it would be convenient.

in gnome i've to edit comix.desktop in order to see it in the menu .. here's mine
Code:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Comix
Name[it]=Comix
Comment=A viewer for Comix files
Comment[it]=Un visualizzatore di fumetti
Exec=comix
Icon=comix.png
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Application;Utility;Comics;

i put it in Utility. Application is too generic, you have to add another value [Utility or Graphics or Office] otherwise a new menu container will be added [Other]

unz: Do you know why the old one didn't work?

Wasn't Categories already set to Application;Graphics;Viewer; for you?

I updated the desktop file for Comix 0.9 to this:
Code:
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Comix
Name[it]=Comix
GenericName=Comic book viewer
Comment=A viewer for comic book archives
Comment[it]=Un visualizzatore di fumetti
Exec=comix
Icon=comix.png
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Application;Graphics;Viewer;

I hope it works, I've no way to tell myself since I run Gnome 2.10 and manages my menus with Denu.
The italian comment was useful as well. :)

slow down man! :) ... i'm still stuck with "OLD" 0.8 .. i'm gonna emerge 0.9 in 5 minutes ..

EDIT:
i emerged it, but i can't see it in my menu .. i can't understand why ... has comix.desktop been saved in utf-8?
Wait for another feedback, probably the problem is mine.

The menu works fine for me. I really do like having the options of having the menu/toolbars.

Hope it was okay just to rename the 0.8 ebuild to 0.9. It seems to have worked fine though.

unz: Why, that version is several days old. :roll:

About the .desktop file; it is saved in UTF-8. Not that I think it would make any difference since it only contains basic ASCII characters anyway. UTF-8 is backwards compatible with those right? Correct me if I'm wrong.

effloresce: Glad you like it. :) The 0.8 ebuild should work as well with 0.9 as it did with 0.8, not that I know how well that is.

Thoughts on making a thumbnailer for it so it shows the firstpage of the comic as a thumbnail? I use beagle alot and having the thumbnails there helps when quick searching for something, and it looks pretty.

If possible, something to make the thumbnails stand out and not just look like plain images, perhaps some post-processing of the image that goes into the thumbnail (kinda like totems video thumbnailer adds film border on the left and right of the thumbnail), my idea here would be a simple fade on the left side to emulate where all the pages are stapled togheter and... hard to explain, see example instead :

http://www.lowspirit.org/Images/comix_border.png

I overdid it but it shows the general idea better then, and you kinda have to overdo it in tiny thumbnails for it to even show.

I have actually thought about it, maybe I'll add it to future versions. Doing something more than just showing plain images is a good idea. The problem is that custom post-processing is kind of slow, but maybe it will run fast enough since the thumbnails will be so small. It is basically a matter of manipulating each colour value in each pixel if there is no ready made convenience function. I made a function myself to Comix which increased the contrast of the images, but it took 5-10 s for each page on my Athlon 2500+ :?. There are probably more efficient ways of doing the same thing ofcourse.

For any newbies wondering how to install the custom ebuild, here's the steps:
Code:

mkdir -p /usr/local/portage/media-gfx/comix
cd /usr/local/portage/media-gfx/comix

wget -O comix-2.1.ebuild http://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=71044
ebuild comix-2.1.ebuild digest
echo "media-gfx/comix ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
emerge media-gfx/comix

Now in Portage as media-gfx/comix.

Moved from Unsupported Software to Desktop Environments as it is now in portage and supported.

And as you may have seen, lots of revision bumps. I had a bad time having it play nicely with mimes/gconf. Thanks to Pontus, I believe everything should be ok in 2.8-r3.

This thread is still alive. :)

I'm glad you like the application, and Vanquirius - don't worry, gconf never plays nicely. :twisted:

Lowspirit: I just realized that I had misunderstood your talk about a thumbnailer all along. :oops: I thought you meant thumbnails for the pages (don't ask me why). Now Comix finally includes a thumbnailer at least.

Comix does not work for me. The 2.7 ebuild does not install an executable.

Then I tried to install comix 2.9. It does install one executeable (comicthumb), but I guess it's not the main executeable.

Code:
>>> Merging media-gfx/comix-2.9 to /
--- /usr/
--- /usr/share/
--- /usr/share/mime/
--- /usr/share/mime/packages/
>>> /usr/share/mime/packages/comix.xml
--- /usr/share/doc/
--- /usr/share/doc/comix-2.9/
>>> /usr/share/doc/comix-2.9/ChangeLog.gz
>>> /usr/share/doc/comix-2.9/README.gz
--- /usr/bin/
>>> /usr/bin/comicthumb
--- /etc/
--- /etc/gconf/
--- /etc/gconf/schemas/
>>> /etc/gconf/schemas/comicbook.schemas
>>> Safely unmerging already-installed instance...

Did I do something wrong? I already tried altering the use-flags, but it did not bring any success.

Python 2.4.2 and pygtk 2.8.2 are installed.

USE flags shouldn't have an effect getting /usr/bin/comix to install.
This line is probably failing for you for some odd reason:
"python install.py install --installdir "${D}"usr 1>/dev/null"
Have you tried installing it by hand?

Yes, I know. But I never know for sure until I tried. ;)

Installing by hand did work, but I find it a bit strange that the ebuild does not give any errors.
I would open a bug report, but with no error messages the devs will probably laugh at me. ;)

Edit: Could the problem be linked to using a ~x86 portage version (portage-2.1_pre5-r2)?

Possibly. Mind testing with stable portage?
