Hi!

I am searching an easy to use eMail client (like TheBat! under Windows) and an scheduler (calender). I don't want to use evolution because it is one big bug. Slypheed Claws seems to be a good eMail Client (and the mozilla email client, too. but i can't import my mails from thebat). KOrganizer isn't good anyway (and I am using gnome and don't want to use qt based programs).

And I need an editor for latex (no, I don't want to use xemacs or vi or something like that).

Thx for your help.

Evolution is one big bug? I never have problems with it... (?)

coz, well... Evolution would've been my advice, since it works great for me (1.2.1).

Evolution is the only combined email/scheduler that I know of, other than web based ones. I don't blame you for not wanting to use evolution though. I don't like it myself.

A lot of people seem to like lyx for latex editing.

My problem with evolution was that it hangs often. And I didn't like it.
Do you know WinEd? Somethin like that would be really nice. I am going to try Lyx.

Evolution never hung for me but it did periodically lose/fail to open it's database. I would actually have to reboot to fix this. I like Sylpheed-Claws better anyway, however Evolution is the only combined calendar/email I'm aware of.

Kile is a quite nice Latex editor if you'd like to try it. I don't use it myself anymore, but I used to.

Yeah, Slypheed Claws seems to be my future eMail-Client. Lyx seems to be good so far, too. Isn't there a calender/organizer in the linux world out there (I don't need a combined email/calendar program)?

If you setup Sylpheed-Claws check out this thread:

You don't like Xemacs for latex. Me neither - I use LyX for that.

But how about Xemacs for email? It has two nice alternative modes: VM and GNUS, both very stable, power and customizable.

Wait, you put Xemacs and vi into one sentence. Perhaps you never saw Xemacs in GUI, did you? You should try. And both VM and GNUS have very nice GUI extensions for Xemacs.

I am now using Kile and JEdit for Latex. Sylpheed-Claws is a good eMails Client so far (has everything I need). KOrganizir is my scheduler now.

Kile is a very good tex editor so far, but i don't know, why it doesn't suppoert automatic (don't know to describe it in english, so here is an exmaple) text:

if i write something like that:
\begin{document}
balablabala \\
balala

it starts to write again at the begining off the line. so i use kile for fast and easy compiling and jedit for editing.

I use sylpheed-claws (my boxen are too slow to run evolution or kde apps anyway) and have only one complaint. When I'm typing in the editor the screen flashes (?!?!). I used JPilot for my calendar when I cared. At work everything is in Outlook (I have no choice) and they gave me an iPaq, so I haven't even bothered to install JPilot on my current machine at home. I would like something that integrates email and calendar - maybe someday evolution or the kde stuff, but that's not a showstopper.

The kde team (and some german companys) are working on a complete outlook/exchange replacement, in kde3.1, there's compatibility with exchange servers, kde3.2 will bring the whole package (methinks it's called kgroupware), check the kde site for more info

If you're running kde or if you don't bother having some kdelibs on your system, you could have a look at ktexmaker2. It has so far always fit my needs when coming to latex editing :)

I have kde installed. But when I want to emerge ktexmaker 2 it depends an qt v2.*. I don't want to install qt 2.*.

Oh yeah, I forgot :( At the time I installed it, I didn't care much about qt2 & kdelibs2. I never had problems though!

If it doesn't have the problem which i told above, than its something for me. But isn't kile only the qt v3.* port of ktexmaker2?

gee, seems like this world is moving sometimes a little bit too fast for me 8O

I just had a look at kile and it pretty much looks like a port of ktexmaker2 for qt3 although it's not mentioned on their website. But the guy who's developing it is the same :)

EDIT: I forgot, but it's probably better then to go with kile than with ktexmaker2

Ok, seems that I have everything what I need to work with my computer ;-).

For eMail and Calander (and notes):
Sylpheed-Claws (for newsgroups too)
korganizer (useable in KDE 3.1)
knotes (not really needed, but i so, damn forgot what i want to say ;-))

For Tex I am using this programs:
Kile and JEdit (because with JEdit it is easier to edit the code)

For HTML/PHP/MySQL Development:
Qunata+ (really nice, better than the Zend IDE)

For some other office work, such as layouts and presentations:
OpenOffice.org (better than MS Office I think, some functions are missing, and excel is better yet, but I don't need it often)

And of cause gaming: Warcraft3 (rulez), Quake3, but no NHL2003 :-((, if somebody get it working with winex, plz tell me how

Ah, C/C++ development:
KDevelop and Eclipse (with Eclipse I have some trouble running it in normal user mode, I hope Dev-C++ will be stable soon)

Bye bye MS!!!
